Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers for Week 23

Here we are, another week into the fantasy baseball playoffs (or consolation bracket… or bye week) for most of you reading this. The grind does not stop, though! One easy thing fantasy baseball managers can do to help win your championship or avoid finishing last is to find effective pitching streamers. Play your starters against the usual suspects we have been exploiting all season, like the Blue Jays, Pirates, Angels, and White Sox. But you can also target matchups this week like Seattle and Cincinnati.

Below are my favorite streamers for the week ahead. I omitted Thursday because, between teams not playing and a lack of quality streaming matchups, there was no pitcher I would recommend adding.

Pitching Streamers for Shallow Leagues (Over 20% Rostered)

Peter Lambert (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Monday 8/31 vs CWS

Peter Lambert pitched a clunker against the Angels on August 20, then came back with a much better outing against the Yankees in his most recent start. Lambert has not completed the sixth inning since late July, but has pitched well, allowing more than two earned runs in a start only the one time against the Angels since the calendar turned to July. This should be an opportunity for another quality outing, and could set Lambert up for a win and a quality start as he faces the White Sox.

Chicago has continued to strike out at a high rate, something they have done all year. They have the sixth most in baseball, while also owning the league’s sixth-highest strikeout rate. On top of that, they have also hit ground balls at the 10th-highest rate in the league. This should be a matchup fantasy managers and Lambert can exploit. He has an 8.7 K/9 rate and a 23% K rate. Lambert has been able to strand runners pretty well too. He has a league-average GB%, but that could tick up against the White Sox.

If Lambert wants to exploit the White Sox’s groundball tendencies, he should lean heavily on his sinker and changeup, which both have induced groundball rates over 50%. His fastball and changeup have been great at inducing whiffs, both owning whiff rates over 25%. They also have been his best pitches at getting batters to strike out. His fastball features a 29% K rate, and his changeup sits at 26%. Here is a look at his fastball generating a strikeout earlier this season:

Lambert has a shot at a solid start in this matchup, and should be on your radar as one of the top pitching streamers when available.

Joey Cantillo (SP – CLE)

Next Start: Wednesday 9/2 vs TOR

The Guardians seem to be managing Joey Cantillo’s innings, as his last six starts have ranged between one and six innings. Outside of one five-run outing in that span, Cantillo has been lights out. Most recently, he managed a quality start against the Angels and has two in his last three outings, along with a win. He faces the Blue Jays in his next start.

Toronto’s offense has been hugely disappointing this year. They have struggled to hit homers, launching the third fewest in baseball this season. It is not surprising that they also have scored the second-fewest runs, all while owning the ninth-highest GB%. Each of those elements goes hand in hand. Cantillo has been excellent at avoiding the long ball, allowing fewer than one per nine innings. He also boasts a 44% GB rate this season, which lines up well against Toronto’s offense.

Cantillo features a spectacular curveball, with a .201 BAA, a 36% whiff rate, and a 25% putaway rate. It has also been his best pitch at inducing strikeouts, with a 35% K rate. Plus, it has generated the highest groundball rate in his arsenal at 65%. Expect him to feature this often against the Jays, especially if he has it moving like this:

Make Cantillo one of your priority pitching streamers for the week ahead.

Pitching Streamers for Deep Leagues (0%-19% Rostered)

Randy Vasquez (SP – SD)

Next Start: Tuesday 9/1, at CLE

Like Cantillo, Randy Vasquez saw some relief innings throughout the season, perhaps in an effort to manage his innings. Since the beginning of August, though, Vasquez has been excellent in the rotation. He is 4-0 in five starts in August, with two quality starts to his name. He should be in line for another win and quality start facing Cleveland’s offense.

The Guardians are not necessarily one of the worst offenses in baseball, but they do struggle to score runs, and that is something to exploit. They have scored the fourth fewest runs in baseball, and possess the league’s second-lowest home run total. Vasquez has been about league average at limiting home runs, which should help him be successful against Cleveland. He has also been slightly better than average at stranding runners, another strength that matches well against Cleveland’s weaknesses.

Vasquez has managed to get a ton of whiffs this season. Four of his seven pitches have generated whiff rates of 20% or better. Unfortunately, those have not necessarily turned into strikeouts. His best putaway pitch is his sinker, with an 18% putaway rate. Still, his fastball, sinker, and cutter have been great weapons for him this season, and should continue to feature heavily in his outing against the Guardians.

Add Vasquez for this game as one of the best pitching streamers for the coming week.

Shane Drohan (SP – MIL)

Next Start: Friday 9/4, at CIN

Shane Drohan has continued to earn his place in the Milwaukee rotation. He allowed two earned runs against a tough Atlanta offense in his latest outing, and has pitched to a 3.84 ERA, with 104 strikeouts in 105 IP this season. He should continue to find success as he takes on Cincinnati next.

Despite playing in one of the most hitter-friendly parks in professional baseball, the Reds have managed to score the sixth fewest runs overall. A major contributing factor is their league-worst strikeout rate, which goes along with the second-most strikeouts as an offense. Drohan has been better than average at inducing strikeouts, with an 8.9 K/9 rate and a 23% K rate. He was even better in the minors, boasting double-digit K/9 rates throughout his time in development. Drohan has been great at limiting homers too, which will help him keep the ball in the park in Cincy.

Drohan is mostly a fastball- and slider-heavy pitcher, and both have impressive strikeout rates – 32% and 37%, respectively. Both also have whiff rates over 30% and sub-.200 BAAs. His slider has been arguably his most effective pitch, and should be one he tosses a ton against the Reds. Take a look at this pitch here:

Drohan should be on everyone’s radar, regardless of league size, for anyone looking at pitching streamers for the coming week.

Gage Jump (SP – ATH)

Next Start: Saturday 9/5, at SEA

Gage Jump has had his fair share of rough outings this season, but he has also tossed some gems. Most recently, he tossed a two-earned-run quality start against Minnesota, where he struck out nine and walked two, earning a win. In his last six starts, Jump is 3-2, with three quality starts, including an 11-strikeout game against Boston. Next in line is the Seattle offense.

The Mariners have been disappointing on offense this season. They have scored the fewest runs in the majors. Strikeouts have also been a major concern, as they own the seventh-worst K%, with the seventh-most strikeouts in the league. Jump has been very good at a few things this season, but two things in particular: limiting runs and striking batters out. He has allowed fewer than one homer per nine innings and has a 70% LOB rate. Jump also has a 9.8 K/9 rate, with a 25% K rate. These skills should lead to success against the Mariners.

Jump’s best weapons in generating strikeouts at such a high rate have been his slider and curveball, with 46% and 38% K rates, respectively. His curveball, though, has arguably been his best pitch overall, and one he should lean on against Seattle. It features a .205 BAA, a 25% whiff rate, a 19% putaway rate, and a 48% GB rate. Here he is tossing it for a big swing-and-miss:

Jump has some sneaky good stuff and should be one of your top choices for pitching streamers in the coming week.

J.T. Ginn (SP – ATH)

Next Start: Sunday 9/6, at SEA

In six starts since mid-July, J.T. Ginn has been a solid streamer. He has not been perfect by any means, but during that span, he went 2-2 with three quality starts. He makes it deep into games regularly, completing the sixth inning in all but one game among those six starts. If he can do so again, he could be in line for another quality start against the Mariners.

As mentioned, Seattle has struggled with scoring runs and striking out. Ginn has just a 7.8 K/9 rate and a 21% K rate, but has flashed better numbers in the past, so it is not out of the question that he might have a decent strikeout total in a game here and there. This could be one of those starts. Ginn has been excellent at keeping baserunners from reaching home, with a 75% LOB rate. He has also induced a 45% GB rate, which should help him keep Seattle baserunners from reaching home.

Ginn tweaked his pitch mix from last season, adding a fastball and curveball, and restructuring his pitch frequency. Ginn has used his changeup much more, especially against lefty hitters, and it has been legit, turning in a 35% whiff rate and a 21% putaway rate. This pitch is filthy – take a look:

Ginn should do well in this one, and fantasy managers in need of pitching streamers should look his way.
