One of the great things about baseball is how much learning from failure is a part of the game. We’ve often heard that players who succeed just 30% of the time in hitting are actually often All-Stars. Though, a similar observation can be made for the number of times it often takes a player to stick at the major leagues. Rarely does a player come up and succeed from the start of their tenure in the majors, but many eventually figure it out. This is a common themes among the players featured in this week’s deep league waiver wire targets list. Either they are reaching their potential in the majors or making a significant progress.
Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 13
15-Team Mixed League Targets
1. Alek Thomas, OF, Diamondbacks (20% rostered)
Alek Thomas is a prime example of a player who has shown incremental growth in his aim to be an everyday contributor in the majors. While dynasty owners have long since cut bait, it’s important to remember that Thomas is still only 25 years old. In fact, he just recently eclipsed his 1,000th at-bat after four seasons in the majors. Now we’re starting to see a more consistent display of his dynamic abilities a he’s started to show signs of a legit breakout. While batting .273 on the season, he’s hit .385 with two home runs over the last seven games. There’s still much upside potential to be realized with Thomas, so target him on the waiver wire while you still can this week.

2. Abraham Toro, 1B/3B, Red Sox (27% rostered)
Another player that appears to be finally making the leap to fantasy relevancy is Abraham Toro. Many were surprised that it was Toro who got the promotion instead of Roman Anthony after Triston Casas’ season-ending injury. However, Toro has quietly been proving his worth by providing production in key situations over the last month. During that time, he’s hit .330 with two home runs. Yet, he’s been making noise lately as he’s .414 with 7 RBI and 7 runs over the last seen games. He’s quickly become a top waiver target for deep league fantasy managers in need of a corner infielder.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Greg Weissert, RP, Red Sox (10% rostered)
By far the hardest category to find on the waiver wire, especially in AL or NL-only leagues, is saves. Fantasy managers often are left to target setup relievers who may only occasionally fall into a random save opportunity. Though they may be a game away from stepping into a larger role to accumulate more saves. His sub-2.00 ERA so far in June has thrust him into a greater late-inning role, and he recently earned his first save. It’s clear he won’t overtake Aroldis Chapman anytime soon as the primary closer. Though given Aroldis Chapman’s age, it’s not far-fetched that Weissert could find his way into more saves as the season wears on.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Heriberto Hernandez, OF, Marlins (5%)
A player starting his major league journey with rare early success is Heriberto Hernandez of the Marlins. While his recent promotion wasn’t highly touted, he’s quickly drawn attention with his play. So far, he’s tallied 10 hits, a home run, and three RBI in his first 24 at-bats. Of course, the .400+ batting average surely won’t last for long, given his .260 career batting average in the minor leagues. His on-base percentage should give him a shot to stick with the club and accumulate valuable fantasy counting stats.
