The majority of fantasy baseball leagues today utilize the free agent acquisition budget (FAAB) for bidding on waiver wire players. However, the depth of a league will determine the bidding strategy best for fantasy managers to put into practice. With deep leagues, hoarding budget often doesn’t yield the results one would hope in more shallow leagues, where top prospects, in particular, are largely not rostered until they are called up.
Yet, with deep leagues, those players are usually rostered far before they are called up, leaving little opportunity to make large bids. Thus, the approach with FAAB bidding in deep leagues should be to use it strategically to continuously find incremental value through pickups on a weekly basis. That’s why we present target players who are either currently making an impact or will be in the coming week.

Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 15
15-Team Mixed League Targets
1. Casey Schmitt, 1B/3B, Giants (23% rostered)
Every week, it seems a late-blooming former top prospect is featured on our waiver wire target list. This week is no exception with Casey Schmitt, the former third-ranked prospect in the Giants’ system. Now, he’s finally making an impact for the big league team. In fact, Schmitt is one of the hottest hitters in the league over the last couple of weeks with a .353 batting average, 4 home runs, and 13 RBI. While it’s clear from his .354 Babip on the season that he’s been getting a bit of luck on his hits, he’s showing progress in other key indicators. His average exit velocity has topped 90 MPH on the season and, as a result, his hard-hit rate jumped to 50%! With that frequent level of power being delivered, it provides a significant boost to his ratios significantly.

2. Isaac Collins, 2B/OF, Brewers (15% rostered)
Usually, when the temps heat up, we see offense tick up across the board. Though no one could’ve predicted that Isaac Collins of the Brewers would be this month’s hottest hitter. In fact, he’s been scorching hot in the last week with a .348 average and a .467 OBP. His steady on-base percentage has led to decent counting stat accumulation in that time period of nine runs and six RBI. Given his career OBP of .380 in the minors, his on-base ability should keep him producing even when his batting average regresses over time. Collins can also contribute the occasional home run and steal, making him a viable middle infield target for deeper mixed leagues.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Gary Sanchez, C, Orioles (10% rostered)
Few players in recent history have made as big of a splash in their first few years as Gary Sanchez. Upon his promotion to the majors by the Yankees, he put his power on display by hitting 53 home runs over his first 672 at-bats. In his third season, the league caught up to him as his batting average cratered from .278 to .186. Now, seven years later, his batting average still hasn’t rebounded as he’s never topped .232 since. Yet, in deep leagues, Sanchez still holds some fantasy appeal as he consistently provides power production when given regular playing time. With Adley Rutschman’s prolonged injury absence, Sanchez has settled into a regular role with the Orioles for the foreseeable future. As expected, he’s delivering on his power with three home runs and 10 RBI over the last 9 games. If you’re batting average ratio is stable, grab Sanchez off the waiver wire to gain ground in other key categories.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Christian Koss, 2B/SS, Giants (2%)
Another Giants infielder who’s heated up as of late is Christian Koss. Unlike Schmitt, there was little prospect fanfare for Koss. Though he’s played his way into the majors at age 27, and is showing quick signs of acclimation. In his last 18 at-bats, he has 5 hits for a .278 batting average. Most notable is his 12 RBI already in his first 69 at-bats. Not known for being a masher in the minors, his surprising line drive power so far in the majors has led to some good outcomes. Mostly, his strong fielding has kept his bat in the lineup, which can lead to sneaky production for a middle infielder.
