Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers for Week 11

We have a pretty good idea, so far, of the worst offenses in the league as we enter week 11. Our prime targets to stream against this week are teams like San Diego, Boston, and Pittsburgh, with a few other struggling offenses sprinkled in as targets. As a fantasy baseball manager, you should use pitching streamers to your advantage by maxing out your innings or start limits. Finding the right streamers is the trick, though, and I am here to help with that.

Below are some of my favorite pitching streamers for the upcoming week.

Pitching Streamers for Shallow Leagues (Over 20% Rostered)

Andrew Abbott (SP – CIN)

Next Start: Monday, 6/8 at SD

Andrew Abbott would be an add in shallow leagues, since he is bordering on roughly 50% rostership. After a rough stretch to end April, plenty of fantasy managers jumped ship. However, Abbott has turned it around of late, picking up quality starts in four of his last seven outings, while also winning four of them and losing just one. His May ERA was a sterling 1.61. He lines up for an advantageous start against San Diego on Monday.

The Padres have struggled with offensive production this season. They have scored the fewest runs in all of baseball, and even with Fernando Tatis Jr. finally hitting a homer, they still struggle to score. The Friars also own the seventh-highest strikeout rate in the league, and have the third-highest groundball rate. Abbott has not been a high strikeout pitcher this season, so a team with this much swing-and-miss is great for his game. Fantasy managers may see a little boost to his K% in this one. Abbott typically has not been a great groundballer either, but has upped his GB rate to 40% this season, and should see it continue to climb against a high groundball-hitting team.

Abbott’s changeup, curveball, and sweeper have induced groundball rates of 52%, 50%, and 44%, respectively, major reasons for the uptick in his GB%. His most effective pitch has been his sweeper. It has generated a 29% whiff rate and a 35% K rate, significantly higher than all of his other pitches. Here he is earning a strikeout on a nasty sweeper, a pitch he should continue to rely on in his next outing:

If Abbott is available in your fantasy league, he is worth an add as one of the top pitching streamers available. In deep leagues, he would be an add-and-hold.

Shane Baz (SP – BAL)

Next Start: Friday, 6/12 vs SD

Much like Abbott, Shane Baz hit a rough patch at the end of April and beginning of May. He had back-to-back games of four earned runs, followed shortly after by back-to-back games of five earned runs. Since then, he has had four straight quality starts and a 2-1 record. He should continue this string of success against a disappointing Padres team.

As mentioned, San Diego’s offensive woes have to do with scoring runs, while also finding it difficult to avoid grounders and strikeouts. Baz has flashed strikeout stuff in the past, boasting a 9.5 K/9 rate across 166 IP last season, but the strikeouts have not been there this season for him. That could change in his start against the Padres. The same can be said for his groundball rate, which is worse than last season and his career norm. He could get that back on track against a team like San Diego that hits a ton of grounders.

Baz’s knuckle curve has been effective at inducing strikeouts, generating a 30% K rate and a 29% whiff rate. It also happens to be a great weapon for him when it comes to inducing grounders, with a 47% GB rate. Baz’s most effective groundball pitch, though, is his sinker, but he only uses it about 3% of the time. Arguably, he should throw it more, especially against lefty hitters. In 74 tosses, it has been hit twice, for a .167 BAA. The pitch quality on his sinker in his last start was through the roof. Take a look:

Baz has some really nice pitches to use to take advantage of an enticing matchup He should be on your radar if you are looking for pitching streamers in a shallow league.

Cade Cavalli (SP – WAS)

Next Start: Saturday, 6/13 vs SEA

In his last seven starts, Cade Cavalli has four quality starts and a 3-2 record, and is flying under the radar on a surprising Nats team. During that span, he has a 46:12 K:BB ratio in his 40 IP. His ERA on the season currently sits at 3.62. He will take that ERA into his next outing against the Mariners.

This is primarily a play to take advantage of Cavalli’s strikeout ability against a team that strikes out a bunch. Seattle has the seventh most strikeouts in baseball, and the eighth highest K%. Cavalli has been lights out when it comes to creating strikeouts. He has a 10.3 K?9 rate in 64 IP this season, as well as a 25% K rate. Those rank 13th and 25th best among qualifies starters.

Cavalli’s curveball has been absurd this season, and is a clear reason for his impressive K rate. It has a .200 BAA, a 42% whiff rate, a 31% putaway rate, and a 36% K rate. Cavalli also uses it to induce grounders, as it possesses a 62% GB rate. In fact, three of his pitches – his sinker, curve, and changeup – feature GB rates of 60% or higher. Cavalli’s improved consistency and ability to mix his pitches well has led to some success this season. Check out how he uses his fastball and curveball combo here:

If Cavalli can continue to find success with his curveball, and add another elite secondary pitch, he could turn into one of the better pitchers in the league. Consider him among your top pitching streamers for the upcoming slate of games and beyond.

Pitching Streamers for Deep Leagues (0%-24% Rostered)

Eric Lauer (SP – LAD)

Next Start: Tuesday, 6/9, at PIT

Eric Lauer floundered in Toronto, but the Dodgers seem to have found a hidden gem after they acquired him in mid-May. For Los Angeles, Lauer has pitched 10.2 innings, allowing three earned runs, while striking out five and walking two. He has one win in that span of two starts. He lines up to take on Pittsburgh next.

The Pirates have a major strikeout problem this season. They have struck out the second most in baseball, and now the sixth highest K% in baseball. Not only that, but they also have the second-highest GB% in the league. Lauer typically features a K/9 rate that hovers around a K per inning, though he is far under that this season, with a K/9 rate closer to five.

Lauer significantly changed his pitch usage this season in Toronto, which could be a reason why he was not as successful as last season. He has used his changeup more, while using his cutter and curveball less. Last season, Lauer had four pitches with whiff rates over 20%, but this season, he features just two. And those are pitches – his cutter and curve – that he is using less frequently this year than last. The Dodgers have clearly noted this, and in his last start, he upped his slider and curveball usage, which worked out well. This should be a trend he continues.

Peter Lambert (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Wednesday, 6/10, at LAA

Peter Lambert’s time as a starter for Houston this season has not been perfect. He has allowed three or more earned runs in four of his eight starts, and has just two starts of zero earned runs. Still, he is worth an add for this matchup, considering his opponent is the Angels.

No team in baseball has struck out more than the Angels, who also own the league’s highest K%. That makes this start for Lambert extremely enticing. Lamber possesses an above-average 8.5 K/9 rate and a 22% K rate, which should play well against the Angels. His biggest issue has been allowing walks, but the Angels rank among the bottom half of the league in walks. Lambert has also been very good at avoiding the long ball, which should help him in this outing.

Lambert’s Arsenal has performed extremely well this season. He features a fastball, slider, slurve, and sinker that all have BAAs under .200. Five of his pitches have whiff rates over 20%. That has translated to a 40% K rate on his cutter. His sinker owns an absurd 81% GB rate, while his changeup and slider groundball rates sit over 40%. Lambert has several ways to get batters out effectively. Just for fun, here is a look at his ridiculous slurve:

Lambert could be more than just a one-and-done option among pitching streamers, especially in deep leagues. Consider him for this matchup and as a regular option going forward.

Martin Perez (SP – ATL)

Next Start: Thursday, 6/11, at CWS

Martin Perez has found success this year in Atlanta, both in a relief and starting role. His last three outings were five innings apiece, and he only has one quality start on the year, so do not expect him to go deep in this one. You may want to avoid him in quality start leagues. As long as he continues to get starts, though, he has a shot at picking up wins for a good team.

Perez faces the White Sox in his next start. Despite Chicago’s ability to score runs, they still strike out a ton. In fact, they have the league’s third-highest K%, and have the fourth-most strikeouts in baseball. Perez has never been a high strikeout pitcher, but he can induce whiffs, and in the right situation, that can lead to Ks. Against Miami, Perez retired 10 Marlins with strikeouts, which is something that he could repeat against the White Sox.

Perez has leaned on his changeup heavily this season, and it has been the correct call. His changeup owns a .106 BAA,  32% whiff rate, and a 51% GB rate. He should consider throwing his curveball more in two-strike counts, though, considering it also features a high whiff rate of 31%.

Perez is a bit of a gamble against top offenses, but he should be one of your top pitching streamers for this week against the White Sox.

Dustin May (SP – STL)

Next Start: Sunday, 6/14, at MIN

Dustin May started the season with a couple of clunkers that have set his ERA back. He allowed 13 earned runs across 7.1 IP in two starts at the beginning of the year. Since then, he has performed mostly well, earning seven quality starts in 10 games. He has found it difficult to land in the win column because St. Louis has not been great, but if your league counts quality starts, May would be a great add for this week. He lines up to face Minnesota over the weekend.

The Twins have some power, but they also strike out a bit. They have the eighth most strikeouts in baseball, and the 10th highest K%. This plays in May’s favor, as he owns an 8.1 K/9 rate through 12 starts. May has flashed some really nice strikeout stuff this season, tallying seven or more Ks in four of his last five outings. He has also improved his walk rate, which will help him against the Twins, who are middle-of-the-pack at inducing walks. May appears to have pitched into some poor luck, considering a high BABIP and low strand rate. Clearly, he has not received much help from his defense. This could improve against the Twins, and inch his 4.59 ERA closer to his 3.88 xFIP or 3.89 SIERA.

May has revamped his arsenal in St. Louis, and it has worked wonders lately. He added a curveball and has tossed his fastball, changeup, and cutter more, while using his sweeper and sinker less. His sweeper has turned into an absolutely filthy pitch this season. Perhaps batters seeing it less has made it more effective. It has a .203 BAA, a 34% whiff rate, a 41% K rate, and a 42%  GB rate. His cutter, changeup, and sinker all have GB rates over 40%, which have taken May to a 44% GB rate overall. This restructured pitch mix has kept batters guessing and should lead May to more success this season. Just imagine trying to hit this pitch:

Fantasy managers should keep an eye on May for the long term after adding him as one of the top pitching streamers for the week ahead.
