The objective in a dynasty league is, at the root of it, the same as a re-draft league: win. However, in a dynasty league, the big picture is important. But, only to a point, as a championship is a championship. Ultimately, it comes down to the point in the team building cycle you are in. Due to development time, dynasty quarterback rankings are a little bit different. As we focus on 2025, let’s take a look at our options.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2025 season.
Dynasty Quarterback Strategy
There’s Only 1 Per NFL Team
NFL quarterbacks can only start, and generally play one quarterback at a time. That means there are just 32 options, at most, in a given week. This makes development that much harder, but either a quarterback has fantasy value or they don’t. There’s no such thing as a timeshare here, so at most, only 32 quarterbacks have fantasy value at a time. Granted, there will be some injuries and fill-ins, but the options here are more limited.
There’s Only 1 Per Fantasy Team
In this situation, we are talking about the majority of leagues. Obviously, in Super Flex and Two-QB leagues, the logic changes. But a good portion of us are just looking at starting one quarterback at a time. Injuries are a part of the game, and you have to cover a bye week, but for the most part, you really only need one quarterback. Of course, you are looking to stash a young player for upside, but generally, you can only start one quarterback at a time. This scarcity should influence your thinking when managing bench spots.
The Aging Curve is Better
It’s very possible that you can roll with the same dynasty quarterback for 10 to 15 years. This is the only position where it’s true. The drop-off as a quarterback isn’t as steep, and if they don’t run, it’s even more muted.
Adjustment Period is Harder and Longer
The flip side of quarterbacks aging better is that the miss rate is a lot higher. Granted, there’s a larger scarcity when it comes to jobs, but young quarterbacks flame out more than any other position. There’s a lot to digest, learn, acclimate to, and consider as a young quarterback. This means there’s a better chance of the young quarterback you are stashing to be a disappointment than a success.
Consider Health
Granted, an injury can’t always be predicted, but some quarterbacks are better at staying healthy than others. Keep this fact in mind when planning your roster.
Dynasty Quarterback Notes
Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears
When you’re drafted number one overall, especially as a quarterback, there’s going to be a lot of attention. Unfortunately, in the case of Caleb Williams, a lot of it was negative last year. He finished just outside of being a QB1 in what was an up-and-down season. His fantasy production was, and will continue to be, saved by his rushing ability (489 yards).
Williams threw for 3,541 yards and 20 touchdowns last year, along with 11 interceptions. The biggest problem was the 68 sacks Williams took, and that will be an ongoing theme. While the offensive line was bad, and was improved this offseason, Williams didn’t do himself favors by holding onto the ball too long and running into some sacks. That also contributed to Williams not throwing the ball down the field with just 6.4 yards per attempt (34th overall) and a 67.3% on-target rate (34th).
To add more issues, the offensive coordinator was fired midseason. Williams now has a new head coach in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Rome Odunze should take the next step in his second year, and rookies Colston Loveland and Luther Burden should help.
The talent, upside, and receiving weapons are there, but now Williams needs to show it.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
To say that it was an up-and-down rookie season for Drake Maye would be an understatement. The Patriots offense didn’t offer much in the way of help as Maye threw for just 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns with inconsistent playing time. However, it was Maye’s 421 rushing yards and two touchdowns that made his season look better from a fantasy perspective.
Not only is Maye entering his second season, but he’s doing so after a strong offseason. His new Offensive Coordinator, Josh McDaniels, should help, along with the addition of wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Even more importantly, Maye should be past the knee and hand issues of a year ago, along with a concussion.
The arm strength is also there for Maye as he looks to take the next step.
Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad thing that Kyler Murray is still just 28 years old. In his first full season since 2020, Murray finished as a back-end QB1. Once again, there’s a theme here as Murray was aided by his 572 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Through the air, Murray wasn’t too bad either, with 3,851 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. Entering his second season, Marvin Harrison Jr. should have a big year, and when teamed with Trey McBride, Murray has a legit duo to throw the ball to. If Murray can stay healthy, he could be headed into the prime of his career.
