Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Wednesday, August 2, 2023. Inside today’s edition, the Cardinals lost Brendan Donovan for the rest of the season in a very surprising transaction. Also, the Red Sox have a lot going on with regard to their pitching, as Chris Sale had his first rehab assignment last night. Finally, Hunter Greene also had his first rehab assignment and seemed to look good. Where does that leave Cincinnati? All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Aaron Hicks – OF Baltimore Orioles, Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles
#Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said injured OFs Cedric Mullins and Aaron Hicks continue to progress, expecting to have both back potentially within next 10-14 days.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) August 1, 2023
Both Hicks and Mullins continue to improve, however, both returns can be considered a setback. Hick was originally expected to miss a minimum of ten days while Mullins was thought to return at the beginning of August.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
Lots to unpack here. First, Chris Sale had his first rehab appearance last night and threw two innings of shutout baseball. He struck out three batters while giving up two walks and one hit. He also threw 40 pitches and his fastball went as fast as 97 mph. Secondly, both Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock threw their own respective bullpen sessions yesterday, but their roles have yet to be defined. It’s been said that after the Trade Deadline, the team would know what they wanted to do with either of them.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
A very positive update on Hunter Greene's rehabilitation start tonight!

There was no word on his velocity, but the overall numbers sound promising. We shall see how he fares against tougher competition and with a larger workload. He is eligible to return on August 17.
Josh Naylor – 1B Cleveland Guardians
Josh Naylor has been scratched from the lineup with right side tightness. Fry moved to first. Gallagher catching.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) August 1, 2023
Naylor is considered DTD while he deals with this side tightness, though no word yet on the severity of the issue.
Charlie Blackmon – OF Colorado Rockies
Charlie Blackmon was in the #Rockies clubhouse yesterday, participated in pregame activities, and worked out after the game. It's my understanding thar he didn't feel the right hand, fractured in June, was quite ready for game action. More information will be known later. https://t.co/4amkA3GtIa
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) August 1, 2023
The setback from Blackmon will cost him some time, but it’s unclear as to how much. There will hopefully be updates today to understand more about the situation.
Griffin Canning – SP Los Angeles Angels
Griffin Canning headed to the IL with right calf tightness. He thinks it’s a minor deal and is hopeful he’ll need only the 15 days. Victor Mederos called up.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 1, 2023
Canning missed his scheduled start on Monday and will now head to the Injured List for the next two weeks. The hope is that he is correct and that the injury is minor.
Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets
Brandon Nimmo was scratched from tonight's lineup due to quadriceps tightness. "We'll have a better idea tomorrow when he comes in," Buck Showalter said, expressing it as a day-to-day thing.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) August 2, 2023
Consider Nimmo DTD while we await a more clear diagnosis based on how he feels today.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte (migraines) is taking full batting practice today in Kansas City. His return is imminent, Buck Showalter said, but it won't happen today. So, probably tomorrow.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) August 1, 2023
Be prepared.
Josh Donaldson – 3B New York Yankees
Josh Donaldson, on the 60-day IL with a calf injury, looked fluid taking batting practice and fielding grounders. He is hoping to return this season.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) July 31, 2023
Donaldosn last played a game on July 15 at Colorado. He was originally expected to miss the rest of the season. There’s a chance that he returns this year, much to the chagrin of Yankee fans everywhere.
J.T. Realmuto – C Philadelphia Phillies
J.T. Realmuto is going to be scratched from the lineup. His throwing hand is still messed up from a slide that caused a huge gash. Garrett Stubbs will catch tonight.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) August 1, 2023
The injury sounds painful, but also manageable once it heals. Until then, look for Realmuto to miss time.
Brendan Donovan – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
We have made the following roster moves: pic.twitter.com/UzMYfsoTE9
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) August 1, 2023
The news was surprising in that Donovan will miss the rest of the season with this injury. He has a torn flexor in his right elbow. The recently activated Tommy Edman appears to be their utility man now.
Nolan Gorman – 2B St. Louis Cardinals
Of note, Marmol said the expectation is for Nolan Gorman to take today off with his back soreness and be available full go tomorrow.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) August 1, 2023
Gorman looks like he will be ready for the Cardinals’ game later today.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays
As everyone has seen by now, an MRI showed there is no structural damage in Bo Bichette’s right knee, per #BlueJays manager John Schneider, who described it as best case scenarios. Bichette isn’t in the lineup today but he’s day to day. Still determining if an IL stint is needed
— Kaitlyn McGrath (@kaitlyncmcgrath) August 1, 2023
Bichette’s injury news was one of the best-case scenarios possible. With no structural damage, he could be back really soon. That said, a trip to the Injured List is still possible, so keep that in mind going forward. Still, with the recent addition of Paul DeJong, the Jays should have a replacement that won’t necessarily hurt them too much.
