MLB Injury Report
Sean Murphy – C Atlanta Braves
Sean Murphy said he was running at 50-60 percent. He continues to feel better each day. He's hoping to play soon.
"We’ll see," he said. "No promises on any day. But the way we’re progressing, hopefully I feel good enough soon."
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) June 20, 2023
Murphy continues to improve daily, but he might still be a few days away from returning to in-game action. He’s still unlikely to hit the Injured List.
Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles, Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles
Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle expected in AAA Norfolk lineup tonight on injury rehab assignments. #orioles #tides
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) June 20, 2023
Both players will likely require a handful of games before being activated from the Injured List. Mountcastle has missed about a month with a groin strain while Mountcastle has missed less time with vertigo.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox
Tanner Houck will have surgery next week to have a plate inserted for his facial fracture. No timetable provided for his return.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) June 20, 2023
Houck’s surgery will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future. While there is no timetable for his return, he is expected back at some point this season. Stay tuned for updates.
Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
Triston McKenzie was examined this morning. He was diagnosed with a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament. He’s being shut down from throwing for at least several weeks. McKenzie guessed it’d probably be 4-6 weeks. They’ll continue to evaluate him regularly.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) June 20, 2023
McKenzie will be out of action for quite a long time here. While the diagnosis above has been set, he is apparently looking for a second opinion. All that being said, he won’t throw for about a month.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Detroit Tigers
Tigers medical update:
— Eduardo Rodriguez to throw live BP Saturday— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) June 20, 2023
This is fantastic news. The BP will be the first time Rodriguez will have faced live batters since the injury. This is a major hurdle to climb and he could be ready for a rehab assignment soon.
Riley Greene – OF Detroit Tigers, Akil Baddoo – OF Detroit Tigers
Riley Greene (fibula) and Akil Baddoo (quad) doing early work. Greene running straight-line sprints but not full-out. Still wearing the air cast.
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) June 20, 2023
Good news for both, even if they are slowly progressing. Greene was still wearing his air cast while doing these sprints. Both players don’t have a timetable from which to return but are at least progressing forward.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Zach Neto said he still feels a little discomfort but it’s getting better every day. He’s still not doing any baseball activity. #Angels
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 20, 2023
Neto continues to be shut down from baseball activities and there is no timetable for his return. It seems unlikely that he will return before the end of this month.
Ben Joyce – RP Los Angeles Angels
Ben Joyce said the numbness and tingling is gone from his fingers. Swelling is better. Still hasn’t thrown a ball yet. #Angels
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 20, 2023
Joyce has yet to throw a ball, but his body seems to be responding well to rest. While this may be a long process, it’s hopefully one that will put to rest the threat of ulnar neuritis.
Julio Urias – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers LHP Julio Urias threw three-inning, 45-pitch sim game to hitters today. Will make rehab start for Rancho on Sunday and, barring setback, return to rotation the following Friday in KC.
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) June 21, 2023
Urias looks all but ready to return, with just one hurdle remaining. Should that rehab outing on Sunday go smoothly, it looks like he will be ready to roll next Friday.
Max Muncy – INF Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said Max Muncy’s left hamstring was responding and there is hope he can return this weekend. #Dodgers #Astros
— David Vassegh (@THEREAL_DV) June 21, 2023
The mysterious hamstring injury continues to baffle, as nobody knows how serious it really is. According to the latest report, Muncy could be activated this weekend.
Gavin Lux – 2B/OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Gavin Lux posted this video of himself running, which he's doing this week for the first time since having LCL/ACL surgery.https://t.co/I55ngfylHo pic.twitter.com/9oKl9Uzzbk
— Matthew Moreno (@Matthew__Moreno) June 20, 2023
Fantastic! Lux is not an option for the 2023 season, but if all goes well, he could be ready to go for the 2024 season.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 2B/OF Miami Marlins
Jazz Chisholm Jr. goes 0-for-2 with a walk in his first rehab game (played 7 innings)
Lots of routine plays for him in CF, but this one was more challenging, catching up to a Magneuris Sierra fly ball on the warning track pic.twitter.com/lBvZ5d91XR
— Fish On First (@FishOnFirst) June 21, 2023
Chisholm Jr. went hitless in his first game back, but the most important part was his getting his footing back in the outfield. There is no word on how long this rehab assignment will be.
Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
What a return to the mound for #Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon‼️

— Somerset Patriots (@SOMPatriots) June 20, 2023
Rodon threw 42 pitches and 27 of them went for strikes. He also told reporters that he had more in the tank and was hitting his stride in the third inning. He will likely have at least two more rehab outings before making his way back to the Yankees.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Nestor Cortes felt good after playing catch Sunday. Yesterday was a no-throw. Plan was for him to move up to 75 feet today. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) June 20, 2023
Cortes did throw from 75 feet yesterday, and the next steps for him are not yet known.
Bryan Reynolds – OF Pittsburgh Pirates
Derek Shelton on the report that Bryan Reynolds was going on the IL: “That was news to me. … He’s not going on the IL.”
Reynolds is out of the lineup today. Been dealing with an oblique thing.
— Jason Mackey (@JMackeyPG) June 20, 2023
This is the only report that brings attention to the oblique, though it’s unclear if that is a typo. Every other outlet states that Reynolds won’t go to the Injured List and that he has been dealing with lower back tightness. Either way, it’s somewhat concerning, but also a DTD situation until we hear otherwise.
Lamonte Wade Jr. – OF San Francisco Giants
LaMonte Wade Jr. was scratched with right side tightness, per the Giants.
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) June 21, 2023
It’s unclear how severe this injury is, but for now, consider Wade DTD. He will likely be evaluated later today.
J.P. Crawford – SS Seattle Mariners
JP Crawford said x-rays were clean but he will probably get a MRI tomorrow. He said he could barely lift his right arm after colliding with Harrison Bader. He was still in some clear discomfort postgame
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) June 21, 2023
The inability to lift his arm after the collision is a scary thought, leading one to believe this is a situation that warrants a trip to the Injured List. We should know more after today’s MRI.
Brandon Lowe – 2B Tampa Bay Rays
Brandon Lowe on the field playing catch for #Rays
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) June 20, 2023
Lowe was shut down from baseball activities two weeks ago, so doing this is a nice step forward. He seems on track with the initial timeline and could ramp things up if his back feels better.
Brandon Belt – 1B/OF Toronto Blue Jays
Brandon Belt (hamstring) ran the bases & hit off a high-velocity pitching machine today
"Looked good, felt good," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider
Belt's eligible to come off IL Weds but club could leverage Thursday's off day for a bit more recovery before a weekend return
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) June 20, 2023
All of this sounds like good news regarding Belt. He seems tentatively poised to return this weekend.
