MLB Injury Report

Jackson Chourio – OF Milwaukee Brewers

The biggest news of the day came before the Brewers threw out their first pitch. It was revealed that Jackson Chourio reaggravated the injury to his hand on a check swing against the Reds, and because of that pain, he went in for tests, which revealed a hairline fracture. The belief is that resting for a while will help it heal itself and eliminate any risk for further damage. It’s a brutal blow to the team and to fantasy managers everywhere who were counting on him with a very early round pick. The good news is that this isn’t season-altering. He should be back at some point in April if all goes according to plan.

Toronto Blue Jays – Team Update

This was great news all around for the Blue Jays. First, Trey Yesavage continues to be brought along slowly. The team doesn’t want to rush someone who has quickly ascended through the minor leagues and doesn’t have a lot of mileage on his body. Look at what Spencer Schwellenbach went through…his arm just couldn’t take the velo jump alongside the massive jump in innings. As for Jose Berrios, I really don’t know how he will pitch through an elbow fracture. It’s as if the Jays don’t want him on their team anymore, and they hope that he will choose to opt out after this season. In all seriousness, it will be interesting to see how his body responds. Finally, Shane Bieber will throw off a mound this week, and while it feels like his future is quite murky, it’s interesting to note that the team didn’t put him on the 60-Day Injured List and stuck with the 15-Day variety. Could that mean they anticipate an earlier return?

Tanner Bibee – SP Cleveland Guardians

Bibee felt like he was off all night, and as a result, he left earlier than anticipated. Apparently, he didn’t feel like himself during the pregame, and despite that, he still struck out seven batters over five innings of work. We will know more about him and his status as time goes on, but his feeling this way so early in the season is not an encouraging sign.

Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros

To those fantasy managers who first saw that Pena didn’t make the Opening Day roster, fear may have been the initial reaction. However, Chandler Rome, who does excellent work covering the Astros, summarized the fine line nicely, stating that Pena is likely to be ready to play before the potential ten days would have been over, so keeping him off the injured List would be like a DTD situation. The Astros have one day off over the next ten, so keeping him as an option off the bench seems like a better idea than crossing him off.

Josh Hader – RP Houston Astros

The team continues to take things slowly here, as live batters won’t be an option for at least two or three weeks. As such, he will also need a rehab assignment after that, making Bryan Abreu a legitimate top ten closer until May. And that is assuming that Hader suffers no setbacks.

Pavin Smith – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks

Smith was a late scratch for last night’s season opener against the Dodgers. We should know more about his situation once the MRI results are in.

Ryan Pepiot – SP Tampa Bay Rays

It feels advantageous to say that a pitcher with hip inflammation is in a good spot, but here we are. Pepiot’s status this weekend will be one to monitor. If he is unable to make this scheduled time or if he feels less than 100% of where he should be following this session, we could see an extended absence. For now, the team’s stance that this will be a short time away holds, but he still has a ways to go before pitching this season.

Zack Wheeler – SP Philadelphia Phillies

Wheeler continues to blow away any expectations one should have after undergoing the procedure that he did last season at his age. All analyses that point to him failing seem to be null and void, so all I can really say is sit back and enjoy the ride. I’ve been wrong about every step of the way he’s taken.

Jackson Holliday – 2B Baltimore Orioles

This is according to the plans that were laid out about a week ago. Holliday continues to progress and is on track to return shortly.
