MLB Injury Report
Shohei Ohtani – SP/UT Los Angeles Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani says he came out of the lineup tonight because he felt something in his right bicep in his last at-bat. He said it was precautionary and it’s the same thing he felt a couple of months ago, but feels it went away “relatively quickly.” pic.twitter.com/eo4Fsx2EpV
— Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) July 4, 2026
Ohtani injured himself while pitching this weekend, and given that this is a recurring injury, the team decided to take things slowly and with precaution. First, they took him out of Saturday’s game as a hitter, giving him time to rest. The good news is that on Sunday, he came back into the lineup, as expected, with the issue somewhat alleviating itself. Still, there’s the underlying bicep problem that has now appeared twice this season. While with the rest of the league this would all be a concerning development, this is Shohei Ohtani, who truly is a one-of-one. There’s a good chance that he is still able to hit this week, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him not pitch again this week.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers righty Brandon Woodruff has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. LHP Drew Rom recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 5, 2026
Woodruff suffered from significantly diminished velocity during Saturday’s start, which led to an inflamed labrum, or in general terms, shoulder inflammation. This injury was apparently very reminiscent of what he felt earlier in the year, which led to a “dead arm”, which makes this very concerning. Recurring injuries are one thing, but he is still trying to work his way back from a serious injury years ago that doesn’t have a great track record of success in rebounds. It’s fair to wonder if his days as a starter are done and a move to the bullpen could be on the horizon. Still, that is pure speculation, and as it stands, a somewhat extensive absence is to be expected here.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins
Twins say Byron Buxton was removed from the game due to "re-aggravation of a prior hip injury."
— Brendan Kuty 🧟♂️ (@BrendanKutyNJ) July 5, 2026
Just awful here, as Buxton had missed four games earlier last week because of this hip, but he re-injured himself on Sunday. Both he and the team called his exit precautionary, but until we know how he feels today, nothing should be off the table. What that means as we advance remains to be seen, but with the All-Star Break right around the corner, he may go on the Injured List now to be ready for the post-All-Star-Break stretch run.
Munetaka Murakami – 3B Chicago White Sox
Munetaka Murakami is supposed to run today and if all goes well, he will travel to @KnightsBaseball Monday for injury rehab. Could rejoin the White Sox at some point this week if all goes well.
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) July 5, 2026
From all reports, yesterday’s session went well, and Murakami will begin his rehab assignment tonight. Given how well he has looked as of late, and how quickly he has gotten better, there’s a chance that he can return to the White Sox before the All-Star Break for some “peace of mind” gameplay. That said, with some leagues requiring lineups set today or tomorrow, it seems like the wiser choice to find an alternative.
Jose Ramirez – 3B Cleveland Guardians
José Ramírez has begun to hit off a tee. Will progress to overhand BP in the coming days. Angel Martínez took BP on Saturday.
Chris Antonetti said Ramírez has met each checkpoint so far but has more boxes to check. Team's hope remains both return after the All-Star break.
— Tim Stebbins (@tim_stebbins) July 5, 2026
Remember him? The good news here is that Ramirez has cleared every hurdle whenever they’ve presented themselves. As long as there are no setbacks, he should be back at some point at the beginning of August. Fingers crossed.
Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros
Jeremy Peña is on track to play in a couple minor-league rehab games this week at Triple-A Sugar Land, Joe Espada said. Provided that goes well, Peña could rejoin the team prior to the final series of the first half against the Rangers next weekend.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 5, 2026
From the sounds of things here, Pena COULD be back this week, giving way to some time off during the All-Star Break. If his past rehab assignments are any indication of how this one will go, he’s gone through them without any hiccups.
Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers
Josh Jung fouled a ball off his knee yesterday and came in feeling sore. He’s being evaluated before determining if he’s available off the bench
— kennedi landry (@kennlandry) July 5, 2026
Jung was not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game, with no indication regarding the outcome of preliminary X-Rays he was undergoing. Given his injury history, it would have been surprising to see him back yesterday, and there is a chance he still requires additional time off for healing.
Ranger Suarez – SP Boston Red Sox
Ranger Suarez on the pinch he felt in his groin area. He felt it on the pitch, not jumping for the ball off the bat. Made it clear he’s still feeling it after the game.
Didn’t seem to know whether he’ll need an IL stint or not. pic.twitter.com/YFvMFmmuTH
— Tyler Milliken (@tylermilliken_) July 6, 2026
It feels inevitable here that the Red Sox will lose Suarez for at least fifteen days. With the All-Star Break taking place next weekend, they may only miss one start from him, if this injury is in fact a minor one. That said, we’ll know more today. Stay tuned.
Roman Anthony – OF Boston Red Sox
Roman Anthony will visit Dr. Gary Lourie in Atlanta this week. He’s a hand specialist and Braves’ head team physician, per @timbhealey.
Tracy spoke about wanting Anthony to avoid the hoopla at Fenway, so that’s why he’s going to Fort Myers. Doctor visit is about peace of mind. pic.twitter.com/7yUmVVCOYK
— Tyler Milliken (@tylermilliken_) July 6, 2026
It’s worth noting that Anthony is no further ahead in his recovery, nor does this move to Florida mean that he is taking the next step in his rehabilitation process. Essentially, this is being done to help both the team and the athlete figure out exactly what is going on and why progress is stalled. This could be good news, or it could be bad. We may find out that everything is okay or that there’s an underlying issue. It’s hard to gauge at this point, but Anthony’s injury and time away remain as mysterious as they are frustrating.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout ran the bases today and he's expected to take BP.
Trout is still heading toward an activation on Tuesday or Weds in Texas, although yesterday he was careful not to make any guarantees because of what's happened in the past.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 5, 2026
All things are looking lined up for a return to the Angels this week. Whether or not it happens tomorrow or Wednesday remains to be seen, but it’s been a lot more active on the return front as of late, with the former All-Star saying how good he’s been feeling, as well as him ramping up his activities. Personally, I’d take a shot and put him in my lineup if I had a weaker outfield.
Grayson Rodriguez – SP Los Angeles Angels
Grayson Rodriguez is likely to go back into the rotation to take the spot vacated by Sam Aldegheri.
His turn would be Friday in Minnesota.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 5, 2026
Be prepared!*
* I think….I hope. I mean, it’s hard to trust the Angels and Rodriguez, as both have a huge track record of failure. However, this feels like it will happen. He threw 78 pitches over the weekend and looked reasonably sharp. With no pain following that outing, it appears that he will be ready later in the week.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 2B New York Yankees
Jazz Chisholm Jr. left today’s game with right big toe discomfort. He was examined by Dr. Christopher Ahmad at Yankee Stadium. X-rays taken were negative. He will be reassessed tomorrow.
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 5, 2026
Chisholm injured himself while sliding into second base. The good news is that this isn’t as serious as it looked, and the hope is that after being reassessed today, he will avoid the Injured List. Stay tuned.
Max Fried – SP New York Yankees
Max Fried faced hitters again today at Yankee Stadium. Aaron Boone said the plan is another live BP on Thursday or Friday before going on a rehab assignment.
— Jorge Castillo (@jorgecastillo) July 5, 2026
Fried tossed just under 40 pitches yesterday, and the plan is for him to increase Sunday’s total later this week. He has felt great and “normal” every step of the way, and the belief is that he will be fine after his bullpen later this week. He will need a somewhat extensive rehab assignment before returning to the Yankees, and all expectations of a July return might need to be cooled off.
