MLB Injury Report: Just When You Thought It Was Safe…

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, June 2, 2025. In today’s report, Corbin Burnes might have a serious injury, Yordan Alvarez has a new lingering injury, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. seems to be close to returning from his injury. All of that and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Corbin Burnes – SP Arizona Diamondbacks

Pitching on four days’ rest, Burnes exited yesterday’s game after giving up a base hit in the fifth inning. He looked visibly frustrated as he immediately called out the trainers to tell them that he was injured. There were video clips out there showing Burnes say things to the team doctors, saying what is believed to be “my elbow, it’s done”, though there is no conclusive audio of that conversation. Regardless, it is confirmed that he has some elbow discomfort, and today he will undergo imaging to determine the damage. Things don’t look promising here, as this could very well be his final pitch of 2025, or even worse, until 2027. Stay tuned.

Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros

The other big news over the weekend happened in Houston, where a day after Yordan Alvarez took live BP to test out his hand, it was revealed that he had a small fracture, which was just 60% healed. There are many problems with this situation, most of which stem from the ways that the Astros run their organization. For instance, the timeline of this ailment suggests that he had an MRI in the early stages of the injury, yet because of inflammation, it was too difficult to see the fracture. Once the inflammation subsided, the team chose not to have another MRI, but rather went with Alvarez’s pain tolerance with this injury. When it didn’t heal quick enough, and when Alvarez completed his batting practice and still had pain, the team then decided to undergo more testing. The reason for the immense amount of backlash is that this feels reminiscent to how the team handled Kyle Tucker’s misdiagnosed injury last year. In addition to that, the Astros have seen backlash for rushing other players back too soon and have had a plethora of pitching injuries over the past two years. It’s a sticky situation right now in Houston.

Kyle Tucker – OF Chicago Cubs

Tucker jammed his finger midway through Sunday’s game and was replaced in the lineup. He underwent X-rays, and while the good news is that he is day-to-day with this injury, there is still a chance for some swelling or more in the coming days. This is something to monitor, however, if you are setting your lineup today, chances are that he is in the lineup for most of the Cubs’ games this week.

Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers

Eovaldi initially had tricep soreness, and it was believed that a few extra days off would make everything right. It turns out that the Rangers decided this weekend that they wanted to give the ace as much time as possible to heal and get himself feeling healthy, thus the decision to go on the Injured List was made. There is no timetable for a return, and his extensive injury history makes this a somewhat worrisome situation. It remains to be seen if this will be a minimal stay on the Injured List.

Daulton Varsho – OF Toronto Blue Jays

This is an unfortunate turn of events for someone who worked so hard in the offseason to get healthy after shoulder surgery. The fact that this is a Grade 1 strain is somewhat promising that it won’t be a long-term issue. Chances are, he will require a little more time after the 10-day minimum, but it doesn’t feel like a situation where much more will be needed. As stated, this is a week-to-week situation, so updates may be sporadic.

Anthony Santander – OF Toronto Blue Jays

Santander went to the Injured List after spending some time trying to heal on his own. It turns out that some significant damage may already have been done here, so the impending MRI will hopefully provide a clearer picture. Chances are that if he gets a cortisone shot, he will need more than the minimum of ten days. Stay tuned.

Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers

Yelich was hit by a pitch on Sunday and had to be removed from the game. The good news here is that he should be okay, though, just like the aforementioned Kyle Tucker, there could be some swelling in the coming days. However, again like Tucjker, he is worth putting into your weekly lineups.

New York Yankees – Team Update

Despite winning last night’s game, the Yankees are leaving Los Angeles with more questions than answers. First off, Jasson Dominguez exited the game after injuring his thumb on a slide. He was replaced by Cody Bellinger, who was supposed to have the night off. He said that there is nothing to worry about, but those tests back home in New York will confirm that proclamation. As for Luke Weaver, he was warming up when he felt something in his hamstring. The hope is that he won’t need time away on the Injured List, but with pitchers and hamstrings, it could also lead to an extended absence. As Bryan Hoch said here, we won’t know more until the team can give it some time.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – OF New York Yankees
