MLB Injury Report

Shohei Ohtani – UT/SP Los Angeles Dodgers

Ohtani left Thursday night’s game early after experiencing some inflammation in his left knee, causing some concern in the baseball world. This happened one day after he threw 102 pitches, making that his third-longest start of the season. There is some wear and tear on his body with an extensive injury history, so some sort of absence is quite possible despite the positive news. The Dodgers aren’t against resting players if it means that the long-term goal of health for the playoffs is achieved. Keep an eye on updates throughout the day to see where he’s at a day after having played both positions.

Justin Wrobleski – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

Wrobleski took a comebacker off of his leg, resulting in a contusion on his hamstring. It doesn’t look like there’s anything overly serious happening here, and if there is a good spot on the body to take one, it is the well-cushioned hamstring area. The good news is that the Dodgers do have an off-day next Thursday, so he does have an extra day in there to recover before a possible start on Friday. That’s also assuming that the aforementioned Ohtani doesn’t miss his next start, though the team is famous for putting together bullpen days or one-day callups as well. Essentially, that’s not very helpful for fantasy terms, just helpful if you’re a fan of the Dodgers.

Luis Robert – OF New York Mets

While it’s good to read that Robert is expected back this season, it’s a bit shocking to read. Has this injury gotten so bad that both he and the team feel the need to make this statement? He hasn’t played since April, and with no timetable in place at the moment, it’s quite possible that this statement needed to be made. Despite his injection, he still has a ways to go before returning, and as mentioned by Robery himself, he might be playing through an injury even when he does return. He might very well be a drop in all formats, both dynasty and redraft.

Will Smith – C Los Angeles

Smith outlined the details of his injury, indicating that this happened about a week ago and that he’s been trying to push through it here. An inflamed disc sounds painful, but the fact that he feels optimistic that he’ll hit and throw in the coming days is good news. Still, he’ll need it to happen first.

Justin Verlander – SP Detroit Tigers

Verlander just completed his second rehab start, throwing 86 pitches, with 53 of them for strikes. The velocity on his fastball averaged just under 93 miles per hour, which is about one mile per hour lower than it was last season. The bad news here is that he surrendered four solo home runs and succumbed to an average exit velocity of around 92 miles per hour. While results in rehab games aren’t necessarily an indicator of readiness, they do tell a story about whether he was able to fool anyone with his stuff. He allowed seven base runners, which isn’t great, but as said, the team will talk to him about how he feels. At age 43, there’s likely no time like the present for him.

Casey Mize – SP Detroit Tigers

Tarik Skubal – SP Detroit Tigers

Kansas City Royals – Team Update

This could be a brutal end to Kyle Isbel’s season, as a Grade 3 tear sounds incredibly painful. For an injury type that tends to linger and doesn’t necessarily have a clear timetable toward recovery. There’s a chance here that he doesn’t play again this year and requires surgery. As for Seth Lugo, this is a remarkable turn of events. He took a comebacker straight off of his forehead, scaring anyone watching. He was able to get back up, but a day later he had some swelling on his forehead. The fact that nothing is showing on his CT scan is shocking, to say the least. It sounds like there is a chance he pitches when his next start would have been, but nothing should be ruled out.

Quinn Priester – SP Milwaukee Brewers

I can’t stress this enough: all fantasy rostership of Priester needs to be relinquished. He suffered through thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms in the offseason, and he opted to push through it. Since then, his rehab assignment has been anything but stable, and now it feels like the worst-case scenario is the likeliest of outcomes.

J.P. Crawford – Seattle Mariners

Crawford looks to be getting closer to a return, and the fact that he’s willing to move around the diamond is a plus for the Mariners and for fantasy baseball managers. He may be worth stashing in leagues where you need a middle infielder or a corner infielder.
