MLB Injury Report

Juan Soto – OF, New York Mets

Soto went on the Injured List on Saturday after suffering a Grade-2 calf strain Friday night. With the news that he would miss at least three weeks of action, it’s fair to start questioning whether or not he should be kept on rosters without spots on the Injured List. The Mets are seemingly out of the playoff spot hunt and will likely be sellers at the trade deadline. With that in mind, his upside is too high to warrant a drop right now, especially if there’s no need to fill his roster spot. However, fantasy baseball managers should keep the idea of replacing him in the back of their minds in case it becomes necessary down the road.

Shea Langeliers – C, Sacramento Athletics

Brutal news on all fronts. First, he is one of the best catchers in fantasy, and losing him down the stretch here for the season is detrimental on all fantasy fronts. Secondly, this takes him off the trade market, leaving the Athletics in a hole, as they could have received a boatload of talent in return for this budding star. He is set to miss the rest of the season if the surgery goes as planned, and hopefully be ready for Opening Day in 2027.

Corey Seager – SS, Texas Rangers

Seager has been progressing well as of late, and this past weekend is a prime example of that. It would appear that the time off and rest gave way to the shortstop having his back problems settle down. The hope is that this upcoming rehab assignment will go smoothly, and that he will then be able to get back on the Rangers’ lineup and stay there. It’s been a disastrous season for him, but even this is an extremely disappointing year for someone as injury-prone as him.

Joe Ryan – SP, Minnesota Twins

The news here after surrendering six home runs in his last outing is a pairing of items that should bring some worry to fantasy baseball managers. The team is saying all of the right things here, with them expecting him back at some point soon, but with the trade deadline approaching, this could take him off the table for a potential deal, and could also be a precursor to an underlying injury. Stay tuned.

Baltimore Orioles – Team Update

Good news here on Chris Bassitt, as a bullpen session that long is a huge step forward in his progression. There’s a chance that he plays the final month of the season. As for Adley Rutschman, at least he was throwing a ball, but it’s somewhat concerning that he couldn’t catch the ball, even with a soft toss, with his left hand. That’s an indication that there is still some soreness. Finally, with respect to Samuel Basallo, his being shut down days after going on the injured List is a concerning development, as whatever is going on there isn’t settling down. From the sound of everything here in Baltimore, the team might be missing both of their catchers for quite some time.

Connelly Early – SP, Washington Nationals

The news on the trade was big, but the focus here will be on the fact that the Nationals have traded for an injured pitcher. However, with the team contending now and also playing for the future, them dealing for a pitcher with elbow inflammation should be seen as an indication that he likely won’t require significantly more time off. In fact, with no structural damage, Early has been throwing lately, and he is aiming for a rehab assignment to begin on August 3.

Cody Bellinger – OF, New York Yankees

Bellinger said he injured himself rounding second on his way to third and decided it was the smart move to get out of the game. He was placed on the Injured List yesterday, and now he will head home for some testing. Once we determine the severity of the situation, we’ll be able to estimate the veteran’s time of absence here.

Ronald Acuna Jr. – OF, Atlanta Braves

It’s looking more and more like Acuna will be back in the Braves’ lineup as soon as possible.

Shohei Ohtani – SP/DH, Los Angeles Dodgers

Ohtani’s knee has continued to show minimal healing, and as such, the team played things safe and postponed his scheduled bullpen session. Not the greatest news, but for most leagues, he is listed as both a hitter and a pitcher, and the batter version of Ohtani has always been the better version too before this season. In leagues where he is listed as two separate players, he is on the Injured List as a pitcher and may remain there for quite some time. The Dodgers will not rush this, especially with postseason aspirations on their mind.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

Blake Snell has done well physically throughout his rehab assignment, and now his next goal will be to reach four innings of work. He will likely need another rehab start after that, but from the looks of things, he is progressing nicely and could contribute six weeks’ worth of fantasy production if all goes well. And, because of time missed and his team’s postseason aspirations, he will likely pitch right up until the end of the season as he prepares for another World Series run. As for Edwin Diaz and Kike Hernandez: Be prepared!
