Welcome to the MLB Injury Report from Fantrax. In today’s edition, we get some great news on Mike Trout and Yordan Alvarez, some soon-to-be great news on Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Xavier Edwards, and some nervously good news on Bryce Miller and Evan Carter. All of that and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Yes, this does mean the Angels are activating Mike Trout tomorrow in Cleveland, per source.

Be prepared!
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
The Astros are bringing in minor-league pitchers to face Alvarez tomorrow, Joe Espada said.
“That means that, once he’s ready, we’re not going to need a rehab assignment. That will be his way to check that box and be ready for games,” Espada said. https://t.co/J33v1fcWqq

Alvarez began the afternoon by once again hitting off a pitching machine, something he had done many times this week. Afterward, it was revealed that he would face live pitching today, indicating that he is ready to take that next step and truly test his hand. If all goes well here, he will likely be activated at some point this weekend. A reminder that the ball is in his court, and the team is waiting for Alvarez to say that he’s ready.
Christian Walker – 1B Houston Astros
Christian Walker is taking ground balls and manager Joe Espada said he will hit pregame. Espada said if Walker's hand feels OK after pregame work he could be available off the bench tonight.

It felt like Thursday’s absence was more precautionary than anything, as he looks to be ready to return to the starting lineup for later today. While anything can happen before the opening pitch, it looks like he will be back.
AJ Smith-Shawver – SP Atlanta Braves
Smith-Shawver is going back to Atlanta to have his elbow examined. Snit said “it doesn’t look good.” https://t.co/1fm5oQ0OMx

Smith-Shawver has already been placed on the 15-Day Injured List for his elbow, which is going to be examined before a diagnosis is revealed. Chances are that this is a season-ending injury that will require major surgery. However, nothing has been made official just yet, so there’s hope that it’s more minor than anything. Stay tuned.
Xavier Edwards – SS Miami Marlins
#Marlins Xavier Edwards will begin his rehab assignment today with Triple-A Jacksonville.
He will start at second base.
Miami plans for Edwards to move there and keep Otto Lopez at shortstop when Edwards is reinstated from the IL.

This is big news for many reasons. First, Edwards started a rehab assignment last night, finishing without a hit over four at-bats, but he did record a run batted in. He likely doesn’t have too many more games to prove himself there and looks almost ready to return. Secondly, he will be playing at second base, which is great in the sense that he will gain second base eligibility. It will also be good for the shoulder that he rehabbed and rested this past winter, hopefully minimizing any future injuries.
Max Scherzer – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Max Scherzer is scheduled to throw live BP on Friday at Rogers Centre. He’ll throw 20-25 pitches; Tyler Heineman will catch; Michael Stefanic and Jonatan Clase will hit.
Goal is for Scherzer to throw a longer live BP on Tuesday. Rehab assignment could come shortly after that.
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) May 29, 2025
There is a path to a return for Scherzer, and it begins today. If he can successfully throw live batting practice, he will then increase the quantity to a heavier dose on Tuesday, culminating in a rehab assignment should everything go smoothly. It’s a tall task for someone at an advanced age and out for so long, but if anyone has the experience to work off of, it’s him.
Evan Carter – OF Texas Rangers

This news seemingly came out of nowhere, as he has only missed a couple of weeks of action. He was diagnosed with a Grade 2 quad strain, which isn’t mild by any means. This does feel rushed, but the hope is that he can complete a rehab assignment that will test out his ailing quad as well as work on his mechanics to get himself on track for success. That feels like a tall order given that he’s only missed two weeks of action.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 3B New York Yankees
Jazz Chisholm Jr. plays five innings at third base in his first game of MLB rehab.

This marked the beginning of what is reported to be a brief rehabilitation assignment. Chisholm himself said that he was given the option to play third base upon his return, as the team needed someone at that position. From the looks of things in his first rehab game, he is almost ready as is. He may need one or two more games before returning, but things are looking good here.
Bryce Miller – SP Seattle Mariners
Bryce Miller will start Sat. for the Mariners. Woo Fri., Miller Sat., Castillo Sun.
— Shannon Drayer (@shannondrayer) May 29, 2025
Miller will start tomorrow for the Mariners. The team has identified the problem, which is a bone spur in his throwing elbow. They feel like they can manage it for the season, allowing him to pitch. It remains to be seen if that is the case, and tomorrow’s game will be the first chance to prove it. Be prepared!
Logan Gilbert – SP Seattle Mariners

— Mariners Minors (@MiLBMariners) May 30, 2025
Gilbert was a bit rusty, as he needed 28 pitches to escape the first inning. Still, the velocity looked good, and Gilbert himself said that he was able to let it rip. He will need at least one more start before returning, but two or more seems right.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres

Darvish went from throwing 51 pitches in a rehab start to being shut down from anything for two weeks. He is only now starting to gingerly play catch, and will need to be rebuilt as he tries to get back to pitching. As mentioned here, there is a chance that he can go right back to where he left off, but the odds of that happening don’t seem to be in his favor, given his age and how long he was dormant.
