Week 20 Hitting Planner for Fantasy Baseball

New faces in new places are the order of the day following a wild week, which included plenty of deals. As the dust settles after a busy MLB Trade Deadline, a new week awaits. Which offenses are in store for a big week, and which ones may struggle? The answers lie in our Fantasy Baseball Week 20 Hitting Planner. Below you will see information on all 30 teams, including matchups and ballpark ratings. This data should help identify some exploitable advantages within your fantasy baseball roster. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Week 20 Schedule Notes

Since the All-Star break, MLB has settled into a general routine whereby teams play Monday through Wednesday, then have a travel day Thursday before their respective weekend series. That trend continues for the most part in Week 20. There will be 13 games played on Monday, with just four games being played on Thursday. As a result, just four teams play more than six games this week. Atlanta hosts Miami for a Saturday doubleheader, giving both teams a marked advantage from a volume perspective. They will play eight games this week. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are the only teams playing seven games in Week 20. The Braves and Pirates are among the seven teams that will remain at home throughout the week. The Reds are among seven teams that are exclusively on the road this week.

Week 20 Starting Pitching Matchup Notes

Arizona and Toronto are this week’s winners of the “Face the Colorado Rockies,” sweepstakes. It should come as no surprise, then, that both lead the way in the Week 20 hitting planner matchup ratings. Their ratings could have been even higher had Colorado not placed Antonio Senzatela on the Injured List with a pretend injury. Even as things stand, they will get favorable matchups against whichever Rockies pitchers they face. Platoon splits could be an issue for several fringe Blue Jays hitters, however. They could face four left-handed starting pitchers this week. That means Davis Schneider and Myles Straw could get some extra at-bats at the expense of Nathan Lukes and Daulton Varsho.

Texas draws the short straw this week from a pitching matchup perspective. The Rangers will face the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies in Week 20. And they are not expected to avoid any of the aces along the way. Texas should square off against Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Zack Wheeler, and Cristopher Sanchez this week. Their other games are against Will Warren and Jesus Luzardo. Yikes. With such a daunting slate of pitchers (and most of them being left-handed), it may be best to bench Swiss Army knife Josh Smith this week. Texas tends to drop him down in the order versus lefties. Similarly, there isn’t much reason to rely on Joc Pederson or Rowdy Tellez this week. Sam Haggerty and Ezequiel Duran should get more run, but neither is a recommended Week 20 start.

Week 20 Ballpark Effects Notes

Following their series in Colorado, the Blue Jays travel to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. Their matchups versus the Dodgers are a mixed bag. Toronto is most likely to face Clayton Kershaw, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow. None are currently at the peak of their powers, though they certainly can shut down opposing offenses. The good news regarding Toronto hitters is that Dodger Stadium has been a very friendly hitting environment, especially for right-handed hitters. It has the third-highest overall park factor (104) for righties over the past three seasons. That includes a league-leading 137 factor for right-handed home runs. George Springer will miss most of the fun, as the team placed him on the 7-day IL due to a concussion. But catcher Alejandro Kirk could be back for Monday’s game.

The Chicago White Sox have shown signs of offensive life in recent weeks. They are third in MLB with a 131 wRC+ since the All-Star break. However, we may see some regression from their offense in Week 20. Chicago begins the week with a trip to Seattle. T-Mobile Park is easily the worst-hitting ballpark over the past three years, especially for right-handed hitters. Matchups against Bryan Woo, George Kirby, and Logan Gilbert are not likely to enhance the outlook for White Sox bats. Chicago is one of the rare teams that will not be idle on Thursday, which is interesting considering they will be out West. They are home to face Cleveland over the weekend. Rate Field in Chicago has been a slightly below-average environment for hitters in recent seasons. That includes an overall 98 factor this year.
