Week 2 is in the books, and what a week it was for quarterbacks. Derek Carr is killing it in Klint Kubiak’s offense, and Baker Mayfield keeps shaking and baking. Surprisingly, both quarterbacks lead the position in fantasy points. On the flip side, Bryce Young got the quick hook from the Panthers after only two games, bringing Andy Dalton back into our fantasy football lives. There’s a lot to cover this week, so let’s jump into the Week 3 quarterback rankings and notes.
Injury Notes for Week 3
- Jordan Love had limited practices this week and is listed as questionable for Week 3. Love suffered an MCL sprain in Week 1 and would slot in as a back-end QB1 if he gets the green light.
- The Dolphins placed Tua Tagovailoa on the IR after he was diagnosed with a concussion in Thursday night’s game. It’s his fourth concussion since 2019. Miami has a bye in Week 6, making Week 8 the earliest Tagovailoa can return. Skylar Thompson will start in the interim and is a downgrade for all pass-catchers.
- Justin Fields will get another start for the Steelers while Russell Wilson is working his way back from a calf injury.
- Justin Herbert day-to-day after rolling his ankle in Week 2. He should be good to go in Week 3, but if not, Easton Stick or Taylor Heinicke would get the starting nod. The Chargers will continue to lean on the run no matter who is under center.
Quarterback Notes
- Kyler Murray is the QB4 in my Week 3 quarterback rankings. He’s fresh off a QB1 performance against the Rams, completing 17-of-21 passes for 266 yards and three passing touchdowns. Murray also chipped in 59 yards on the ground on five attempts. Up next is a Lions defense that was vulnerable in the air and on the ground in 2023. The unit was bottom-six in passing yards and passing touchdowns allowed last season. They also surrendered 419 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns, both tied for third-most. Murray should be able to take advantage, as he’s rushed for 55+ yards in each game this season. Murray has the passing weapons and a plus ground game to finish as a top-five option in Week 3.
- It’s time to buy back into Joe Burrow. He finished as QB9 last week, throwing for 258 yards and a couple of touchdowns in a tough-luck loss against the Chiefs. This week, he gets one of the more cushy matchups against the Commanders and their sieve-like defense. Washington gave up the most fantasy points, passing yards, and passing touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks in 2023. Unfortunately, things aren’t looking any better this season. Washington is bottom of the barrel in both fantasy points per game (23.9) and passing touchdowns allowed to the position (6). Start Burrow with confidence this week.
- Derek Carr and the Saints have steamrolled defenses, scoring 40+ points in each of their two games this season. Carr’s 11.4 yards per attempt leads the position, and he’s thrown for at least 200 yards and totaled three touchdowns each week. Carr and Company should continue to roll in Week 3. They face an Eagles team that allowed the second-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks (22.3) in 2023. This season, Philadelphia ceded at least 240 passing yards and two passing touchdowns to both Jordan Love and Kirk Cousins. Klint Kubiak’s offense has transformed the Saints, and Carr is cashing in. I’m high on Carr until he proves otherwise, and he’s QB10 in my Week 3 quarterback rankings.
- Geno Smith and the Seattle offense are humming along under OC Ryan Grubb. Smith has quietly scored the ninth-most fantasy points through two weeks and is sixth in pass completion (73.9%) and passing yards (498). Smith should continue clicking this week. He gets a favorable matchup against a Dolphins defense that allowed 18.1 fantasy points and the seventh-most touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks last season. Smith is a top-range QB2 with QB1 upside in Week 3.
