Week 3 Quarterback Sleepers and Streamers

Wow, Week 2 was Wild! Who could’ve seen Jared Goff throwing for 5 touchdowns after that Week 1 performance? Or even crazier, Russell Wilson is currently the QB2 heading into the Monday night games. We’ve also now seen that one of the biggest names, Joe Burrow, is about to be sidelined for at least three months. Justin Fields might miss a week with a concussion, and Brock Purdy is expected to miss another week at least.

With all the Week 2 fallout, this makes the Sleepers and Streamers all the more important. Expect the managers in your league to spend up big on replacements and backups, so make sure you pick up the right guys.

Last Week, we went a solid 3 for 4 in this article. Drake Maye had a huge game against the Dolphins, just like we predicted, and is currently sitting at QB4. Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence and Matthew Stafford got you 19.2 and 17.3 points, respectively, each a win for the streamer category. Our lone dud was Kyler Murray, who only put up 14 points, but hey, he still outperformed both Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts.

Current Season Tally: 6-4

Week 3 Quarterback Sleepers

Daniel Jones @ Tennessee Titans

Writing this before Week 3 waivers happen means I don’t have the most up-to-date roster percentages, but I’m going to assume that Jones goes over the 50% rostered mark on Wednesday, which means that he’s moved from Streamer to Sleeper.

In my Week 1 article, I wrote a lot about the reasons I think Jones could really surprise this year, but he’s exceeded even my wildest predictions. He was the QB2 in Week 1, and so far, is the QB7 heading into the Monday night games. This means he’ll be, at worst, the QB11 for the week. That’s pretty amazing for someone who we didn’t even know was going to start this offseason.

The entire team has juice and really seems to be rallying behind Jones and his play. He’s been extremely accurate, is always a threat with his legs, and has a good core of pass catchers to spread the ball to. Week 3 will provide a matchup with the Titans, who have a soft defense and an offense that currently can’t stay on the field. I see no reason why the hot streak for Danny Dimes should end on this one.

Caleb Williams vs. Dallas Cowboys

After a solid Week 1 outing, Williams faltered a bit in Week 2 against the Lions. Considering that Detroit put up a fifty-burger on them, you’d think Williams would have attempted more than 30 passes. Luckily, he has had at least 5 rushing attempts in both games, which does help his baseline.

Heading into Week 3, he gets a Cowboys pass defense that seems like one to target early in the season. They did just let Russell Wilson notch 450 yards against them, after all.

Rome Odunze seems to be on the verge of a breakout season, and Williams has plenty of other quality receivers to chuck to. I think the team decides to throw more in this one, and hopefully, Williams can yo-yo back into the Top 12 QBs on the week.

Week 3 Quarterback Streamers

Michael Penix @ Carolina Panthers

Just like the Cowboys, the Panthers should be a team we target with our Quarterbacks. Penix saw his pass attempts halved (42 to 21) between Weeks 1 and 2, but that likely has more to do with how the game against the Vikings played out. The Falcons had a surprising lead for the near entirety of the game, and the Vikings’ defense couldn’t do much against the Falcons’ running back duo. This turned Penix into more of a game manager as the team slowed things down and grinded out the win.

I expect Atlanta to want to show out a bit more in Week 3 against their division rivals. While the team clearly runs through Bijan, we’ve seen what he can do with a quick screen pass at any point, which, of course, will always boost Penix’s yardage totals. I’m also curious to see where Penix winds up in the rushing department. He went from 6 attempts and a touchdown in Week 1 to only 1 attempt in Week 2. Against a soft rush defense, I’d love to see him use his legs more again.

Mac Jones vs. Arizona Cardinals

The NFL scriptwriters keep surprising us with Mac Jones currently sitting at the QB9 for Week 2. Against the Saints, he showed that he is a good fit for the Shanahan Offense, getting rid of the ball quickly and hitting receivers in stride. The 49ers don’t need a gunslinger behind center; if the QB can fit into the system, they’re going to have value.

Mac gets the Cardinals this week and the Jaguars next week, so if you’re someone who already got hit by the injury bug, Jones could serve as a good bridge for your team while you try to find something more permanent.

The team is going to keep feeding CMC, but much of that comes through the air, and Jones gets all those pints too. While expecting another three-touchdown performance might be a bit too much to ask, 250 yards and 2 touchdowns seem well within the realm of possibility every week he’s out there as the starter.
