Week 5 Quarterback Rankings for Fantasy Football (Weekend Update!)

Bye weeks start this week, with Jalen Hurts and Jared Goff being the more noteworthy quarterbacks on the shelf in Week 5. However, looking at the Week 5 quarterback rankings, the position feels pretty deep. Quarterbacks have dodged the injury bullet for the most part, and dual-threat options continue to rise and solidify their position near the top of the ranks. Plus, Jordan Love returned with a bang and should be a top option from here on out. To find out which other quarterbacks have favorable matchups this week, let’s move to the Week 5 quarterback rankings.

Quarterbacks on Byes in Week 5

Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts, Will Levis

Injury Notes for Week 5

  • Anthony Richardson left Week 4 with a hip injury and is considered day-to-day. If he suits up this week, he gets a cushy matchup against a Jacksonville defense surrendering the most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. Joe Flacco would get the starting nod if Richardson is a no-go. The veteran filled in nicely last week, throwing for 168 yards and two scores. Fun fact: Flacco has now thrown multiple touchdowns in his last six games, dating back to Week 13 when he took over the starting gig in Cleveland. It’s hard not to be Wacko for Flacco. UPDATE: Richardson was a limited participant in practice all week and is questionable for Week 5. It’s worth noting that Flacco took first-team reps on Friday, so keep tabs on further updates.

Quarterback Notes

Bye Weeks: DET, LAC, PHI, TEN

  • Justin Fields is starting to find his groove in the air and on the ground. In the last two weeks, he combined for 557 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. He also tacked 61 yards on the ground and punched in three scores with his legs. Fields should continue rolling in Week 5. He gets a favorable matchup against a Dallas unit that’s giving up the 10th-most fantasy points per game to the position. Also, Fields should be able to take care of business on the ground, as the Cowboys surrendered the sixth-most rushing yards and two rushing scores to quarterbacks, tied for third-most this season. Fields is my QB6 in the Week 5 quarterback rankings.
  • On paper, Sam Darnold‘s matchup against the Jets looks like a tough one. New York has given up the fewest fantasy points and second-fewest passing yards to opposing quarterbacks this season. Also, they’ve surrendered a minuscule two scores through the air. But when looking at their last three opposing quarterbacks — Bo Nix, Jacoby Brissett, and Will Levis — the Jets’ defense suddenly doesn’t look so fierce anymore. And while they did limit Brock Purdy in Week 1, that game was a blowout where Purdy played game manager to a run-heavy Niners team. Don’t fear Sam Darnold in Week 5. He’s thrown multiple touchdowns each week while racking up at least 19.9 fantasy points in his last three games. Darnold is QB5 on the season and is a top-12 option for me in the Week 5 quarterback rankings.
  • Patrick Mahomes drops in the Week 5 quarterback rankings. He’s QB17 on the year, averaging 14.4 fantasy points per game. In fact, Mahomes has had trouble putting up fantasy points for a while now, only surpassing 17 fantasy points once since Week 8 of last season. Oof. That 13-week drought could continue as Mahomes has a stiff matchup against the Saints in Week 5. New Orleans allows 12.8 PPR points to quarterbacks this season, tied for the fifth-fewest. Additionally, while the Saints have had difficulty containing the pass, they’ve shut down scoring opportunities. Through four weeks, they’ve ceded only one passing touchdown, a league-best mark. Mahomes falls just outside the top 12 in my Week 5 quarterback rankings.
  • Trevor Lawrence is coming off his best game of the season, throwing for 169 yards and a couple of touchdowns. While it’s not an eye-popping stat line, he should be able to build off the outing in Week 5. Indianapolis is one of the most generous defenses against quarterbacks this season, allowing the second-most fantasy points per game to the position. They’ve also been vulnerable through the air, with Justin Fields and Caleb Williams throwing for at least 300 yards and a touchdown in the last two weeks. Lawrence is starting to gel with Brian Thomas Jr, and could get Evan Engram back this week. Lawrence is a TE2 with TE1-upside in the Week 5 quarterback rankings.
