2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series #102 Kayson Cunningham

We’re 80 days from Opening Day, and the 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series shifts to a young infielder with polish well beyond his years. Coming in at #102 is Kayson Cunningham, a middle infielder whose advanced bat control, speed, and feel for contact drive his long-term projection. Cunningham doesn’t rely on loud tools alone, instead winning with instincts and consistency at the plate. As the list tightens, he profiles as a high-upside dynasty piece with a strong foundation heading into 2026.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #102 Kayson Cunningham

The D-backs keep stocking their lower levels with athletic hitters who can really move the barrel, and Cunningham fits that lane. He’s just 19, getting his feet wet in complex ball, and while the surface line won’t grab you yet, the underlying markers suggest the kind of foundation Arizona has turned into real players before.

Through 52 plate appearances, Cunningham’s .255/.308/.584 line is being dragged by a microscopic .021 ISO and only one extra-base hit. That’s produced a 67 wRC+, about 33 points below the league environment. Context matters with tiny samples, and a couple of things jump off the page. An 8.2% swinging-strike rate hints the bat-to-ball skills are intact despite a roughly 29% strikeout rate; that combo often signals a young hitter taking called strikes and learning pro-zone nuance more than someone getting overpowered. The batted-ball mix backs up the “contact-first” look: 39.4% of his contact has gone to the opposite field with a 54.5% ground-ball rate, and only 27.3% pulled. That’s a lot of inside-out contact for a teenager, which can keep the average afloat but mute impact until he starts turning balls out front.

Mechanically, the swing looks geared for line-drive contact with a direct path rather than lift. That’s great for making plays in the middle of the field and spraying hits, but it helps explain the early .021 ISO and dearth of barrels. The development path here is straightforward: add strength, learn to get the head out on driveable pitches, and nudge the attack angle so he isn’t pounding the top half into the dirt. If he pulls the ball in the air even a tick more, think pull rate into the low 30s and the ground-ball rate sliding under 50%, the game power grade can creep from fringe to playable. The approach already shows signs of a hitter who sees it: an 8.2% SwStr% with a small-sample walk total suggests he isn’t lost; he’s adjusting. Arizona can work with that. The timeline is long (our ETA sits around 2030), but these are the ingredients I like to bet on when the hit tool shows up first.

There’s just enough athleticism to project a handful of steals in time, even though the early ledger shows only one swipe. More important is how the contact quality trends as he settles in. If the opposite-field bias softens and the ball starts leaving his bat on a truer angle, you’ll see the OBP and OPS rebound quickly from the early underperformance relative to league average.

Fantasy Outlook

Cunningham is a developmental stash with a hit-first foundation, sitting just outside our Top 100 at No. 102 and squarely in the “arrow-up if the batted-ball mix improves” bucket. In Dynasty, he’s a watchlist add in shallow formats and a fine speculative hold in deeper farm systems given the age, feel for contact, and organizational track record. Short term, the low ISO, high ground-ball rate, and modest walk profile cap his Points value; he’s more of a long-haul Roto play where batting average and future chip-in speed can matter once the swing starts lifting. Key checkpoints for 2025: ground-ball rate trending down, pull% nudging upward, and ISO pushing toward .100. If those boxes start getting checked, he moves from interesting lower-level name to legitimate climber by midseason; if not, we’re looking at a utility-floor profile and a longer wait.
