2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series #114 Kruz Schoolcraft

We’re 91 days from Opening Day, and the 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series shifts to San Diego and one of the more intriguing upside arms in the lower minors. Coming in at #114 is Kruz Schoolcraft, a left-hander whose combination of size, arm strength, and raw stuff gives the Padres another high-ceiling pitching project to develop. Schoolcraft is still early in the refinement phase, but the physical traits and flashes of bat-missing ability are enough to keep him firmly on the dynasty radar as a longer-term bet, especially for managers willing to be patient heading into 2026.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #114 Cruz Schoolcraft

The Padres didn’t waste any time challenging their teenage lefty. Kruz Schoolcraft opened 2025 in full-season ball, and his very first taste looked like most 18-year-old debuts: flashes of electricity wrapped in chaos. The box score will scare some folks, but the underlying swing-and-miss is exactly what you bet on at this stage.

Let’s get the noise out of the way first. Schoolcraft’s debut line (1.2 IP, 2 ER) puts an ugly 10.80 ERA and 2.40 WHIP on the page, with a walk rate that clearly ran hot. That’s not unusual for a teenager seeing full-season hitters for the first time. What matters right now is the bat-missing ability, and that popped immediately: a 26.3% swinging-strike rate with 4 strikeouts in 1.2 innings is loud. His K/9 sat at 21.6 in the minuscule sample, and even with the free passes, his FIP (4.60) checked in roughly a half-run better than league average. No homers allowed, either. In other words, the runs came from traffic, not from getting squared up.

Age-to-level context matters here. At 18 in A-ball, you’re largely evaluating raw stuff, delivery repetition, and whether hitters are comfortable in the box. They weren’t. The whiff rate tells me at least two offerings are already playing above the level, and the early misses are more about timing and release than a lack of strikes forever. Walks will likely ebb and flow as he finds rhythm and sequences more confidently. He doesn’t need to dot corners; he needs to live in the zone more often and steal early-count strikes so the bat-missing traits can play in pitcher’s counts. If he nudges the called-strike component forward, the CSW% will land in a healthy range and the ERA will come back to earth as the small-sample volatility burns off.

I’ve got Schoolcraft in that 110–130 prospect pocket right now because the ingredients are here: a fastball that can miss bats, a breaking ball with bite, and enough changeup feel to keep righties honest down the line. The present command is below-average, as the 16.2 BB/9 shows, but that’s par for the course for an 18-year-old. Clean up the strike efficiency and he projects as a bat-missing mid-rotation lefty. If the strike throwing never crests above average, the fallback is still a nasty late-inning look. Either way, this is the early profile you want to bet on: whiffs first, polish later.

Fantasy Outlook

Dynasty players should be patient but intrigued. Schoolcraft’s early indicators (26.3% SwStr, no home runs allowed, FIP better than his ERA) scream, “Buy skills, fade results,” but the timeline is long, and his ETA sits out around 2030. In deep Dynasty formats (300–500 prospects rostered), he’s a stash now because strikeout upside travels, and teenage arms with real bat-missing ability can jump fast once the walks taper. In Roto, the K potential is the selling point; in Points, the free passes will hurt in the short term, so you’re playing the long game. Not a 2025 redraft name and probably a watchlist in shallower Dynasty, but if you can live with the volatility, there’s mid-rotation strikeout juice in this arm once the strike throwing stabilizes.
