2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series #142 J.R. Ritchie

We’re 136 days away from Opening Day, and the countdown rolls on with another installment of my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series. Coming in at #142 is J.R. Ritchie, a right-handed pitcher in the Atlanta Braves organization whose rapid post-surgery rise and polished repertoire have put him firmly on the fantasy radar. Ritchie’s electric arsenal, featuring a lively mid-90s fastball and an array of breaking balls, paired with advanced control, allowed him to dominate across three levels in 2025, showcasing both swing-and-miss stuff and efficiency beyond his years. For a 22-year-old already knocking on Atlanta’s door, Ritchie’s arrow is pointing firmly upward.

Daily Baseball Prospect Write-Up Series #142 J.R. Ritchie

When a pitcher fresh off Tommy John surgery posts video-game numbers and blitzes through three minor-league levels in one season, dynasty managers take notice. The Braves have quietly built a formidable pipeline of arms, and Ritchie’s 2025 campaign reinforces why. Through mid-May at High-A Rome, the 22-year-old righty was arguably the most dominant arm in the South Atlantic League, leading the circuit in ERA (1.30), WHIP (0.79), wins and innings while holding batters to a ridiculous .161 average. He even capped that High-A stint with a Maddux, a nine-inning, one-hit shutout on just 95 pitches, striking out nine, an exclamation point that earned him a promotion to Double-A.

The jump to Double-A brought a dose of humility, as more advanced hitters weren’t so quick to chase off the plate. Ritchie found he had to mix pitches and adjust on the fly when his go-to slider didn’t miss bats quite like it used to. He still managed a solid 3.49 ERA over eight Double-A starts (roughly a strikeout per inning), all while demonstrating maturity in reading swings and refining his approach. In fact, one of the most encouraging signs was how he kept evolving his arsenal as the season wore on. Originally a fastball-slider-changeup pitcher, he introduced a two-seam sinker, added a curveball and a sweeping slider, and even tweaked his slider grip into a cutter to give hitters a different look; by year’s end, he had up to six distinct pitches he could deploy, giving him a deep toolbox to keep hitters guessing.

Ritchie’s adaptability and poise culminated in a dream summer showcase. He earned an invite to the All-Star Futures Game in July, hosted in Atlanta, and took the mound as the National League’s starting pitcher, firing a scoreless, hitless inning in front of the home crowd. Mere days later, the Braves bumped him up to Triple-A Gwinnett for the final stretch. Facing older, seasoned bats, Ritchie continued to impress: his Triple-A debut was a six-inning quality start (3 ER, 6 K), and he held his own through multiple outings. All told, his 2025 minor-league run spanned 140 innings with a sparkling 2.64 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 140 strikeouts, a remarkable stat line that earned him Atlanta’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors and rocketed him into top-100 prospect status by season’s end.

Let’s be honest about the risks: young pitchers are always a precarious bunch, and Ritchie is no exception. He isn’t an overpowering flamethrower; his fastball sits in the 92–95 mph range, and his once-wipeout slider is still regaining its pre-surgery bite, so he’ll need to continue relying on command and pitchability to retire big-league hitters.

He also more than doubled his career-high innings in 2025, meaning Atlanta will likely be cautious with his workload moving forward. The good news is he’s shown plus control (walking only around 2.5 per nine innings since returning) and an aptitude for adjustments that belies his age. If his stuff holds up and he keeps missing bats at the upper levels, Ritchie has the ingredients to become a mid-rotation stalwart for the Braves, with an outside shot at more if everything clicks. For now, he comfortably slots as a top-150 overall prospect in my book, and he has the momentum to push into the top-100 range with another strong showing.

Fantasy Outlook

In Dynasty, Ritchie is a high-upside arm worth investing in, but one that comes with the usual pitcher caveats. The upside, a near-MLB-ready starter who could contribute strikeouts, solid ratios, and wins on a traditionally strong Braves club, is balanced by the inherent volatility of young pitching. He’s on track to reach Atlanta sometime in 2026, likely after a few more Triple-A tune-ups to begin the year. Shallow formats can afford to monitor him from the waiver wire until a call-up is imminent or he forces the issue. In deeper leagues (300+ prospects rostered), Ritchie should be rostered wherever possible as a potential impact arm; his combination of proximity and talent is exactly what you gamble on in that prospect tier. The key checkpoints in 2026: keep missing bats at Triple-A without a spike in walks, and prove his arm can handle a full starter’s workload coming off surgery. If he clears those, the helium comes fast.
