We’re 47 days from Opening Day, and the 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series checks in on a high-upside arm just beginning his pro journey. Coming in at #78 is Kyson Witherspoon, a right-hander whose size, stuff, and strike-throwing foundation give him long-term starter potential. Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #78 Kyson Witherspoon

Boston invested heavily in Kyson Witherspoon on draft night, and the profile explains why. Selected 15th overall in the 2025 draft out of Oklahoma, Witherspoon enters pro ball as a physically mature right-hander with power stuff, starter traits, and a track record of missing bats in the SEC. He did not pitch professionally after signing, but his final collegiate season provided a clear snapshot of both his upside and the remaining development points.

Witherspoon’s 2025 season at Oklahoma was his most complete. Across 95.0 innings, he posted a 2.65 ERA with 124 strikeouts against 23 walks, good for an 11.75 K/9 and a 2.18 BB/9. The strike-throwing took a real step forward compared to 2024, when his walk rate sat north of four per nine. He paired the improved command with bat-missing ability, holding opponents to a 0.85 HR/9 while working primarily as a starter. The underlying indicators supported the surface results, with a 2.86 FIP reinforcing that the performance was earned rather than luck-driven.

The arsenal is built to miss bats at the next level. Witherspoon works with a mid-to-upper-90s fastball that reaches 99 mph and plays up due to deception and extension despite modest natural life. His best secondary is a firm cutter in the upper-80s to low-90s range, complemented by a tight slider and a deeper curveball that can both flash above-average. The changeup remains the least consistent pitch, but it shows enough fade to project as usable with continued refinement. With four distinct looks, he has multiple paths to strikeouts when sequencing is on.

The developmental hinge is command consistency within the zone. While the walk-rate gains in 2025 were meaningful, Witherspoon can still lose feel for individual secondaries, leading to elevated pitch counts. The encouraging sign is that his mechanics stabilized during his junior season, resulting in cleaner release points and improved strike efficiency. Boston’s decision not to push him after the draft aligns with a profile that already has the stuff, but benefits from continued command layering before full-season pro workloads.

Fantasy Outlook

In dynasty formats, Witherspoon profiles as a high-upside pitching prospect whose fantasy value hinges more on command than raw stuff. The strikeout foundation is real, supported by his college rates and four-pitch mix, and his ability to limit home runs adds stability. In points leagues, he has the ingredients to become a strong innings and strikeout contributor if the walk rate holds near 2025 levels. In roto formats, early WHIP volatility is likely, but long-term, he projects as a mid-rotation starter capable of delivering above-average strikeout totals, making him a worthwhile dynasty hold for managers willing to be patient during the early development phase.
