We’re 49 days from Opening Day, and the series shifts to a long-term upside play in the lower minors. Coming in at #80 is Billy Carlson, a teenage shortstop whose value rests on projection, athleticism, and developmental runway. Carlson is very much a future-focused dynasty asset, with raw tools that will take time to refine. For patient managers, he represents the type of prospect who can outgrow his current fantasy cost if the bat comes along.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #80 Billy Carlson
The White Sox did not draft Billy Carlson for subtlety. Taken 10th overall in the 2025 draft out of Corona High School in California, Carlson entered pro ball with one of the strongest defensive reputations in the class. Evaluators widely viewed him as the best defensive prep shortstop they had seen in years, a label that helped him rise despite questions about how quickly the bat would come along. Chicago backed that belief with a $6.235 million signing bonus, the largest ever given to a high school player in the organization.
Carlson’s defensive profile is the carrying tool. He showed elite instincts, smooth actions, and range to both sides, pairing that with plus arm strength that allowed him to make throws from any angle. Several scouts believed that if he were not such an advanced shortstop, he might have been drafted as a pitcher instead. He reached 97 mph off the mound as an amateur and spun an impressive curveball, a testament to the arm talent and athleticism that show up across his game. In the field, the combination of range, hands, and arm pointed toward future Gold Glove caliber defense.
Offensively, the evaluation was more complicated. Scouts consistently flagged the amount of movement in Carlson’s setup and right-handed swing, noting that he tinkered frequently with his stance and timing. The swing could get long, and at times, he became overly passive, allowing hittable pitches to pass. Those concerns were not about raw strength or bat speed, but about simplicity and repeatability. Chicago’s developmental focus was expected to center on streamlining the offensive approach and allowing his natural coordination to play without excess moving parts.
Because Carlson did not play professionally after being drafted, his profile remained entirely projection-based entering his first full season. What he brought with him was a strong athletic foundation, a premium defensive home at shortstop, and enough raw tools to justify patience at the plate. The White Sox believed that with a quieter setup and more decisive swings, his hand-eye coordination and strength could translate into meaningful power production over time, with some evaluators projecting eventual 20 home run upside if the offensive adjustments took hold.
Fantasy Outlook
Carlson is a long-term dynasty investment whose fantasy value hinges almost entirely on offensive development. The defense guarantees opportunity and time, but without production at the plate, he will not matter in standard fantasy formats. If the White Sox succeed in simplifying his swing and approach, there is a path to a power-speed shortstop who contributes across categories, though that outcome remains several years away. For now, he is best treated as a deep dynasty stash where patience is built into roster construction. The glove gives him one of the safer real-life floors in the class, but for fantasy managers, the bat will ultimately decide whether he becomes relevant or remains a name to monitor rather than roster.
