Scarcity. In building our mono-league fantasy baseball teams, it’s a never-ending battle. We also need to pay close attention to the player pool. In the case of our NL-Only Third Base Rankings, one player was limited by injury, and two are new to the player pool.
Those are all very important factors, as third base is one of the weaker positions in the National League this season. As we dig into our third base rankings for NL-only leagues, it’s important to secure steady production.
National League Only Third Base Notes
Max Muncy, Los Angeles Dodgers
Injuries held Max Muncy to just 100 games last season, but when he was in the lineup, the veteran was his normal, productive self. While other fantasy managers chase flashier options, there is something to be said about Muncy.
While it might generate some level of frustration because that’s what the Los Angeles Dodgers have done to us, Muncy is in prime RBI territory in arguably the best lineup in baseball. Last season, he finished with 19 home runs and 67 RBI, along with 48 runs scored, in his limited at-bats.
The .243 batting average is going to generate some concern, but his 16.5% walk rate certainly takes care of things in OBP leagues.
From a batted ball perspective, there’s a lot to like with respect to Muncy continuing at his current level. Muncy had a 13.6% barrel rate and 51.5% hard hit rate. Assuming a full season, there’s a solid chance Muncy returns to being a 30/100 contributor, or at least close to it. That works in all leagues, but especially in NL-only leagues.
Willi Castro, Colorado Rockies
While we are looking at Willi Castro as a third baseman, he is quite versatile and can help deepen your roster. Castro is also eligible at second base and outfield, so he allows your roster construction to go in multiple directions.
It’s important to note that with Castro, you are giving up significant power at third base. And that is operating under the caveat that he now calls Coors Field home. While it will benefit him offensively, it’s not enough to change the overall profile.
Castro does have some power, but it is limited. Of greater concern is that he’s currently projected to bat seventh for Colorado.
In 454 plate appearances last season, over 120 games, Castro struggled on his way to a .226 batting average. He is a career .244 hitter, but Castro can accumulate production. Last season, that was 11 home runs, 33 RBI, and 58 runs scored. The greater concern is that Castro only stole 10 bases. In 2023, we saw Castro at his peak with 33 stolen bases.
The hope here is that we see a little Coors Field boost and he gets back to running. Castro is more of a late-round target who will receive regular playing time and help deepen your roster.
Alex Bregman, Chicago Cubs
From the perspective of an NL-Only fantasy baseball manager, Alex Bregman signing with the Chicago Cubs is a welcome development. Any time we can deepen the player pool with a solid option, it’s a plus.
In 114 games last season, Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs, 62 RBI, and 64 runs scored. On the surface, nothing about that truly stands out, but injuries did limit his at-bats. From a metrics standpoint, Bregman isn’t a flashy player, but he has a track record of success.
Bregman has four seasons with at least 93 RBI and two in which he surpassed the century mark. His .189 does limit his home run upside, but with the wind blowing out in Wrigley Field, Bregman could be good for 25 home runs.
In Bregman, we have one of the better floors. It also doesn’t hurt that he strikes out at a rate of just 14.3% with a 10.3% walk rate.
