Welcome to the pre-season 2026 Starter Pitcher Rankings! There may not be any other position in professional sports as tricky to evaluate and project as pitching in baseball. This is because the physical attributes of a pitcher, like their agility or strength, often don’t determine their level of success. Rather, it’s the combination of their technique and mental acuity that fuels performance, similar to golf or other precision sports.
In addition, very few pitchers offer predictability year-to-year. In fact, certain pitchers are predictably unpredictable on a yearly basis. For instance, Blake Snell goes from outright awful in the first half of seasons to seemingly unhittable in the second half. Also, Aaron Nola fluctuates between a top-tier and mediocre pitcher on an every-other-year rotation.
Thus, assessing and ranking pitchers requires deeper analysis than traditional player grades used for hitters. Beyond a player’s recent and historical performance, factors like their park dimensions, divisional matchup competitiveness, team run support, and more are of relevance. In this first starting pitcher rankings list of 2026, I took all of these aspects into consideration to compile the top 125 rankings.
2026 Starting Pitcher Rankings
Again, the rankings below are based on a 15-team, 5×5, two-catcher, roto league. Later in the preseason, we’ll go deeper for those who play in mono-leagues and other larger formats.
To further assist with drafting, I have added in tiers to show key inflection points in the rankings list. Below is an overview of the tiers with a few notable names called out in each to explain.
Tier 1 (Anchor Aces): Draft these elite aces (Skubal, Skenes, Crochet) early to anchor your rotation and stack hitting in the middle rounds.
Tier 2 (Workhorses): This group of pitchers features many proven and reliable pitchers, like Sale, Gilbert, Webb, and more, who can deliver 20+ quality starts with great ratios on a near annual basis.
Tier 3 (Sometime Stars): Most of the pitchers in this tier have shown their star potential at many periods of their career, like Gausman, Glasnow, Valdez, and more. However, they have also shown their struggles to sustain that star-level of talent. Real value can be found here if willing to draft at a discount.
Tier 4 (Aspiring Aces): Ironically, if you were to project new entrants into the top 10 for next year’s rankings, you’d likely scroll down to this tier. Promising young stars, like Perez, Misiorowski, McLean, and others, all have shown flashes of stardom in small samples but it will take this season to prove it’s real.
Tier 5 (Safe SP3s): This group is a mix of either aging veterans, like Nola and Gallen, or slow-developing rookies, like Baz and Burns, who all have about the same ceiling as floor.
Tier 6 (Sneaky Sleepers): It seems every year there’s a heroic bounce-back effort from a forgotten starting pitcher. Likely, this will occur from a pitcher in this tier with former breakout players like Lopez, Lugo, and Ober in the mix.
Tier 7 (Best of the rest): There comes a point late in every draft where you just have to take calculated guesses on a pitcher’s health or playing time opportunity. Will Verlander rebound in Detroit, or will he get replaced with a younger arm, for instance.
