Cross’ Prospect to Target: Jose Salas
Signed for $2.8M back in 2019 out of Venezuela, Salas had to wait until 2021 to make his professional debut, but what a debut it was. In 55 games split between Complex Level and Lo-A, Salas slashed .305/.391/.405 with 14 doubles, 14 steals, and two home runs with a 9.6% walk rate and 22.2% strikeout rate. As a switch hitter, Salas showed zero platoon split issues, hitting .297 or better from both sides with a nearly identical ISO.
Now, that ISO was only .100 overall, and power is the part of Salas’ game that lags behind a bit. However, there’s still solid projection left on his 6’2 frame and the hope is that more power will come as he fills out thanks to his bat speed and contact skills from both sides of the plate. Salas projects as an above-average hitter with above-average or better speed that could settle in as a top-of-the-order type of hitter down the road with the potential for double-digit homers annually, maybe even 15-18 at peak.
Right now is a great time to try and acquire him in dynasty leagues as his value is still very reasonable, even after his solid showing in 2021.
Clegg’s Prospect to Target: Ian Lewis
Ian Lewis is still relatively unknown and a player you can acquire very cheaply in dynasty leagues. Lewis made a strong impression in his pro debut last season. The 19-year-old switch hitter slashes .302/.354/.497 with three home runs and nine stolen bases in just 43 games.
Lewis has plenty of projectable power in his profile despite being listed at only 5’10”/177. Last year he produced exit velocities as high as 110 mph which is very strong for a player who was 18 at the time getting his first taste of professional baseball. Lewis also has great bat-to-ball skills and makes consistent contact on pitches all over the zone.
Lewis will face his first tough test in 2022 as he will likely be starting in Low-A Jupiter. But, the test is one Lewis is up for. This is the type of prospect you want to be early on before his price tag soars.
