James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox
James Paxton will join the Red Sox in Atlanta. Alex Cora plans on inserting him into the rotation, but not in Atlanta. Cora didn't rule out a six man rotation.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) May 6, 2023
The team wants to avoid using him against Atlanta, despite the fact that he last pitched on Friday. He has been a little erratic with the walks while rehabbing but otherwise has posted some solid numbers.
Adam Duvall – OF Boston Red Sox
Adam Duvall went to the IL on April 10. Transfer to the 60-day pushes his best-case return to early June.
Red Sox also have Trevor Story, Adalberto Mondesi on the 60-day. Yu Chang is on the 10-day.
Roster picture should be clearer by the All-Star break.
— Bill Koch (@BillKoch25) May 6, 2023
It’s looking like early June is when we can expect Duvall back at the earliest, though nothing is set in stone. As you can see, the team is ravaged by injuries again this season.
Eloy Jimenez – OF Chicago White Sox
Update on Eloy Jiménez: pic.twitter.com/TPHkJ98GJN
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) May 7, 2023
Awful news, as the superstar-to-be will have to wait at least one month to get things going. The good news is that he was treated immediately and solved the problem. The bad news is that the White Sox don’t have much depth.
Jake Fraley – OF Cincinnati Reds
Jake Fraley has been scratched with lower back stiffness. Henry Ramos will replace him in the order.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 6, 2023
There’s no word on whether this will be an ongoing or minor issue. As it stands, consider Fraley DTD until otherwise noted.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Happy 33rd birthday to Jose Altuve, who is swinging a bat and taking batting practice at T-Mobile Park. This is surprising. pic.twitter.com/8kZDBIz9wV
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 6, 2023
The window to buy low on Altuve is closing fast. He could begin a rehab assignment in short order.
Lance McCullers – SP Houston Astros
Lance McCullers Jr. threw in the bullpen today in Seattle and apparently hit 90 mph twice.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) May 6, 2023
The results here are encouraging, though it’s unclear which pitch type(s) he was throwing. That said, the team could use him due to the recent depletion of their rotation. He might be a good player to stash now if he’s available.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Rendon’s thumb is sore after the collision with Thaiss last night. Nevin’s decision to give him the day today. Originally was scheduled for a day off tomorrow.
— Erica Weston (@EricaLWeston) May 6, 2023
The issue could be minor, but we’ll know more after he checks in later today. For now, Rendon is DTD.
J.D. Martinez – UT Los Angeles Dodgers
JD Martinez is hitting in the cage today for first time since back injury two weeks ago. #Dodgers Dave Roberts said he expects Martinez to return during series in Milwaukee depending on how this goes. Will take live ABs at some point before then
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) May 6, 2023
Be prepared.
Johnny Cueto – SP Miami Marlins
Johnny Cueto stayed down for an extended period after this play at first base. The training staff checked his foot/ankle.
He left the game under his own power.#Marlins | @JaxShrimp pic.twitter.com/RKLN5mkFr7
— Fish on the Farm (@marlinsminors) May 6, 2023
It was a rough day overall for Cueto, who surrendered six runs in just over two innings of work and then left with the injury. There will be more information to come.
Carlos Carrasco – SP New York Mets
Carlos Carrasco (illness, elbow bone spur) "is not doing well," per Buck Showalter. He's been throwing at Citi Field but won't be able to make his scheduled rehab start this weekend due to a virus.
Carrasco had been slated to return by mid-May, but this pushes back his timeline.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) May 6, 2023
It’s unclear if Carrasco is “not doing well” because of the elbow injury or the illness, but either way, expect his return to be delayed.
Kolten Wong – 2B Seattle Mariners
Wong rolled his left wrist and underwent X-rays that came back negative … Scott Servais he's day-to-day. https://t.co/qMRlelASwc
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) May 7, 2023
Despite the heroic effort in the attached video, Wong was in great spirits after the game. The negative X-rays likely make him DTD.
Ryan Helsley – RP St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said closer Ryan Helsley was unavailable to pitch today because of knee soreness.
The injury is not considered to be serious & the club hopes Helsley will be available on Sunday.
The bullpen surrendered three runs on Friday & two more runs today.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) May 6, 2023
Helsley had a solid following his blowup against the Giants at the end of April. The team will need him back in order to close out games soon.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B Toronto Blue Jays
Source tells me that Vladdy’s wrist discomfort is right at the bottom of the top of his left hand, if that makes sense. Shouldn’t be a long-term thing, he’s likely available to PH tonight, but don’t be surprised if he misses tomorrow too, with #Bluejays off Monday.
— Mike Wilner (@Wilnerness) May 6, 2023
This could be something or it could be nothing. Guerrero did not enter the game last night, despite likely being available, and will have today off. We may not know more until Tuesday, since the Jays have a day off. If one had to guess, he’ll be in the lineups next week.
