Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves
The #Braves today claimed RHP Dereck Rodríguez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred RHP Kyle Wright to the 60-day injured list.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 15, 2023
As expected, Wright himself thought that he’d be out of action for at least two months. This move makes it official while also allowing the team to make another roster move.
John Schreiber – RP Boston Red Sox
Right lat tightness for Schreiber.
— Julian McWilliams (@byJulianMack) May 16, 2023
Schreiber has been a solid option out of the bullpen, so any extended absence will be missed.
Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs
Cody Bellinger says his left knee is sore but is relieved initial tests ruled out worst-case scenario after awkwardly landing on leaping catch.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) May 16, 2023
Bellinger landed awkwardly after trying to make a catch in the outfield. Consider him DTD while he gets himself right, but he’s avoided anything serious here.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds, Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds
The #Reds today announced the following transactions. pic.twitter.com/xfsqqmAgrA
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) May 15, 2023
Friedl had been teetering on the brink of being placed on the Injured List for days. He will miss at least the next week while trying to get better. Votto isn’t eligible to make his debut for the Reds until May 30, but there’s no indication that it’s going to be that soon. He’s still recovering and rehabbing from his early attempt to return.
Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
McKenzie will begin his rehab within the next few days, which is a big step forward for him. There’s been no word on where he will throw or for how long, but a good guess would be a lengthy rehab assignment.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve will head to Corpus Christi tomorrow to play with the @cchooks for the next few days. @SportsTalk790
— Michael Connor (@MC790) May 15, 2023
Altuve is feeling better, despite the abysmal performance thus far in rehab. He will likely be rehabbing for another week or so to get himself into game shape.
Jared Walsh – 1B Los Angeles Angels
Phil Nevin said Jared Walsh felt good about the improvement in his timing over the 3 games he played at AAA. They're off today and he'll keep playing in AAA starting Tuesday. Nevin said they'll "leave it up to him" to determine when he's ready. #Angels
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) May 15, 2023
The situation with Walsh is and has been a tricky one. This is more about how he feels physically and psychologically since his injuries have been head-related. He’s done well in his rehab thus far, but he’ll likely need a long rehab outing in order to fully prepare.
Shohei Ohtani – UT/SP Los Angeles Angels
Ohtani developed a little stiff neck during the game but he said he doesn’t think it’s a big deal.
“As of now it feels alright. Gotta see how it feels tomorrow.” https://t.co/nBJ4gkYahn
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) May 16, 2023
The stiffness in his neck may have contributed to an off-night on the mound, but if anyone can battle through this, it’s Ohtani. He himself noted that he should be alright despite the feeling of being uncomfortable at times. He will sleep it off and get back at it today.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon is going on the IL with a left groin strain. Livan Soto was called up from Double-A.
Chad Wallach was also activated from the concussion IL.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) May 15, 2023
Rendon will miss the next week and a half with a groin ailment. It’s unclear if he’ll require more than that amount of time, but given his injury history, it can’t be out of the question.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
RHP Trevor Megill recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
RHP Colin Rea optioned to Triple-Nashville.
1B Luke Voit placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained neck.

— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) May 15, 2023
Woodruff originally stated that he expected the end of June to be his timeline for a return. This move to the 60-day IL only allows the team to utilize another roster spot. This does not change Woodruff’s status or health at all.
Kenta Maeda – SP Minnesota Twins
The hope is Kenta Maeda will be throwing off a mound by the end of the week. #MNTwins
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) May 16, 2023
Maeda has been on the Injured List for more than fifteen days. During that time, he has just begun playing catch. He has a long way to go before returning, but this is a step in the right direction.
Luis Severino – SP New York Yankees
Be prepared as Severino is likely to be back sooner, rather than later.
Darick Hall – 1B Philadelphia Phillies
Great news for Hall, as he was a breakout candidate earlier in the year before this unfortunate injury. Time will tell what the Phillies will do at first base.
Jose Alvarado – RP Philadelphia Phillies
Alvarado has been on fire to start the season, so anything that hints at a return is good news for the Phillies. Luckily for the team, they have plenty of options in the bullpen to help out when needed.
Manny Machado – 3B San Diego Padres
X-rays on Manny Machado’s hand were negative. No broken bones.
— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 16, 2023
A collective sigh of relief from everyone. Machado was HBP on his hand and had to leave the game. There was some concern for a broken bone, but those worries are gone given the results of the x-rays.
Joc Pederson – OF San Francisco Giants
Giants roster moves:
OF Joc Pederson placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right hand contusion (retroactive to May 13).
OF Mike Yastrzemski reinstated from the 10-day Injured List.
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) May 16, 2023
Pederson has been ailing that hand since Friday and had yet to return. He will miss some time to ensure that the hand gets better.
Dylan Carlson – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Dylan Carlson says he’s hopeful things stay day-to-day for him. Was walking around the clubhouse pretty gingerly, said that he might be available in a “super emergency” tonight. Late arrival last night means no imaging yet. Going to see the doc shortly. No running, hitting yet.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) May 15, 2023
We likely won’t find out much more until later today. It’s encouraging though that he would have been available in a “super emergency”, though I guess a blowout win doesn’t qualify as one.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Injured #STLCards outfielder Tyler O’Neill (low back strain) is getting in some pregame work. He is scheduled to begin an MiLB rehab assignment on Thursday. pic.twitter.com/nBRG7i2QxT
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) May 15, 2023
Great news as O’Neill looks to get himself back on track.
Yandy Diaz – INF Tampa Bay Rays
Update on Yandy Diaz appears to be good news for #Rays. Also Fairbanks is activated, it’s time to meet the #Mets, Williams crash course, Beeks as opener, more https://t.co/oXtRnpX1Fg
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) May 15, 2023
This is fantastic, as Diaz has been the steady rock for the team. A long absence would have been a big hole to fill.
Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers
Yerry Rodriguez has been optioned to make room for Cody Bradford.
Corey Seager will NOT be activated tonight, but will be in next couple of days, per Chris Young
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) May 15, 2023
Be prepared, as Seager should be back any day now.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun Jin Ryu and Chad Green are both throwing bullpens in Dunedin as they rehab from Tommy John.
“Next month, they could be facing hitters and be in games,” Ross Atkins says. #BlueJays
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) May 15, 2023
This is a positive development for Ryu, as he’s throwing bullpens and feeling great. There’s no word on how well he’s throwing, what pitches, or even how his body feels. That said, this is still good news.
