MLB Injury Report
Austin Hays – OF Baltimore Orioles
Austin Hays (left hip contusion) is improving, could be an option off the bench tonight, per #Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who is hopeful Hays could be back in lineup in a day or two
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) July 5, 2023
Hays did not come off the bench but looks as if he could play before the All-Star Break.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox
Cora on Houck: "He's not eating solids yet, only soups, I think he's lost like seven pounds, but he's in good spirits. He's going to see the doctor tomorrow and after that nutrition is the next step and exercise-wise hopefully he can start getting after it on Friday."
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) July 5, 2023
It’s good news that he may be close to starting to exercise. It’s natural to lose weight when you’re only drinking your nutrition, so he will need to put back some muscle and get himself back to the way he was. All that being said, it’ll be a long road ahead for him.
Adalberto Mondesi – SS Boston Red Sox
Adalberto Mondesi still isn't doing any baseball activities, Alex Cora said today. Some running but not much more.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) July 5, 2023
He should not be in any fantasy conversation for 2023 until he takes the next step forward.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Trevor Story is making fast progress in his rehab and Alex Cora said there is a chance he could begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star break. No plans to come back early as a DH, when he returns it will be as a shortstop.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) July 5, 2023
Fantastic news to watch for in the near future. Stay tuned.
Dansby Swanson – SS Chicago Cubs
Per David Ross, #Cubs will reevaluate Dansby Swanson’s heel tomorrow. He will not be in the lineup but he they’ll decide tomorrow if he’s available off the bench.
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) July 6, 2023
It looks like Swanson will miss today’s game after leaving last night’s game in the seventh inning. The hope is that he will return before the All-Star Break. Stay tuned as after today’s evaluation, we should have more details.
Nick Madrigal – 2B/3B Chicago Cubs
Imaging shows #Cubs Nick Madrigal had a moderate right hamstring strain. They plan to keep him moving but let the strain heal before he resumes baseball activities.
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) July 5, 2023
It was hoped that Madrigal would be back within the ten-day minimum, but having a moderate strain likely means it will be an extended absence. He won’t be able to do much of anything baseball-related until he is healed.
Spencer Turnbull – SP Detroit Tigers
As stated, the neck feels great and it’s all about building up arm strength and timing. Essentially, it’s a Spring Training timeline for Turnbull.
José Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Astros GM Dana Brown said he doesn't yet know if Jose Altuve will go in the IL. The Astros will go over the results of his MRI Thurs. But Brown doesn't sound like he expects Altuve to play before the All-Star break regardless. "I don't think there's any rush to bring him back."
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) July 5, 2023
It’s an interesting approach here, as the All-Star Break is right around the corner. If Altuve were to go on the Injured List now, he’d be eligible to come back just after baseball resumes next weekend. Time will tell, but it’s trending in the direction of him heading to the Injured List.
Anthon Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
The Angels did not put Anthony Rendon on the IL because there’s a chance he can play Friday, Nevin said.
They will continue to evaluate him tonight and tomorrow to see if he needs the IL. If he does, he’d be eligible the 2nd game back after the break.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 5, 2023
The Angels have the day off on Thursday. They are hoping that Rendon will be ready to go on Friday after not playing today. If he does go on the Injured List, it sounds like he’ll only miss a game or two.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout had surgery to remove the fracture today.
“He feels great. Surgery went well. … he was happy he could get this done right away so he can get back to the team as quick as possible,” said Phil Nevin.— Sarah Valenzuela (@Sarah_IsabelVee) July 5, 2023
The timetable for his return is estimated as a four-to-eight-week timeline. It’s too early to tell right now if Trout is on the short end or the long end of this timetable.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff has thrown off flat ground the last two days at a high effort rate and hopes to throw a bullpen this weekend.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) July 5, 2023
Woodruff had a setback last week with concern that he wasn’t healing as well as he should have. Here’s hoping that this bullpen session can quell any of those concerns as he moves toward a return.
Rowdy Tellez – 1B Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers are hopeful Rowdy Tellez's IL stint will be a minimum 10 days. Tellez was adamant it will be minimum. It's something that's bothered him for a bit and reached a decision point.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) July 5, 2023
Tellez’s shoulder had been bothering him for a while. It could be the reason why his batting average is at .213 and why he didn’t hit a home run in June.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics
Esteury Ruiz will undergo x-rays and possibly an MRI tomorrow. Injured his throwing shoulder diving back into first base. Kotsay said he felt “something” but wasn’t sure if it was a pop.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 6, 2023
This doesn’t sound good at all, as nobody ever likes to hear or think they’ve heard a pop. Fingers crossed that he can be back just after the All-Star Break.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres
Friday: Darvish
Saturday: Snell
Sunday: TBA— Jeff Sanders (@sdutSanders) July 5, 2023
Be prepared.
Ty France – 1B Seattle Mariners, Bryce Miller – SP Seattle Mariners
France remains out of action while nursing his undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, the latest on Miller “not pitching for a while” is concerning, to say the least. It leads to some speculation that there could be an underlying issue here that’s not being revealed. Nobody except Noah Syndergaard has blisters that linger on for weeks and weeks.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards CF Tommy Edman was scratched from tonight's game with right wrist discomfort.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 5, 2023
The belief and hope is that the injury isn’t severe enough to last longer than a day or two.
