Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Sunday, August 6, 2023. In today’s edition, it looks as if Trevor Story will take close to the full twenty days from which to finish his rehab assignment. He will miss time through the weekend, but his rehab finishes on Wednesday, which is the absolute latest that he can return. Also, Jazz Chisholm Jr. injured himself yet again yesterday, but he himself thinks he’ll be fine. Whether or not that’s the case remains to be seen. Finally, Mason Miller took another big step forward today, and the hope is that he can pitch again this season. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Gabriel Moreno – C Arizona Diamondbacks
#Dbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno has started hitting balls off a tee and flips and is feeling better. His baseball activity should ramp up next week.
— Jack Sommers (@shoewizard59) August 5, 2023
There has been little to no news regarding Moreno, who has been off since July 23. Since then, Carson Kelly has just three hits, so the Diamondback would obviously welcome a return from Moreno.
Garrett Whitlock – SP/RP Boston Red Sox
Cora says Whitlock’s velocity was up (93-94) with good shape of the pitches. They’ll see how he feels tomorrow and then discuss next steps, potentially a rehab assignment.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) August 5, 2023
Whitlock will likely be back as a reliever, so his ramp-up to action won’t take as long as it would had he been a starter.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Trevor Story will DH for Worcester today in Syracuse and play shortstop tomorrow.
The Woo Sox are off Monday. The clock runs out on Story's 20-day rehab assignment on Wednesday, so presumably he will return to the Sox at some point next week.
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) August 5, 2023
Story’s return to Boston has and will be delayed even further. It looks like he will take the twenty-day maximum before he comes back, though anything is possible as of Monday.
Gregory Santos – RP Chicago White Sox

— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) August 5, 2023
It looks like the White Sox will have a new closer for the short term while Santos is away to be with his family.
Jake Fraley – OF Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said Jake Fraley’s mindset is getting back in a few weeks from the toe injury.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) August 5, 2023
Fraley was mysteriously left out of Friday’s game and the reason for it was finally revealed a day later. It’s good to see that he will be working on returning, but an absence this late in the season is difficult to overcome.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds, Jonathan India – 2B Cincinnati Reds
Some updates from David Bell
-Nick Lodolo has a live bullpen on Monday and then will throw two innings on Friday.
-Jonathan India is expected to return early next week.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) August 4, 2023
Lodolo’s live bullpen and two innings on Friday make for a good week as he continues to ramp himself back to the Reds. He is still slated to return later this month, but he also has a lot of hurdles to clear in the meantime. Meanwhile, India is expected back soon, with some speculation having him return on Tuesday.
Javier Baez – SS Detroit Tigers
Javier Baez was scratched from today's lineup due to a death in the family.
It's possible that he will be placed on the bereavement list. https://t.co/UPyltqCEGR
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) August 5, 2023
Baez may or may not be placed on the bereavement list. Either way, his family is wished the best.
Taylor Ward – OF Los Angeles Angels
Taylor Ward underwent surgery yesterday, Phil Nevin said. Ward had a reconstruction of his left orbital bone and had internal splints placed in his nose. He spent the night in the hospital but was released today.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 5, 2023
Ward is essentially out of action for the remainder of the year. More important than baseball, both his livelihood and health are wished well.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 2B/OF Miami Marlins
"It wasn't really a big issue. I was about to go back out, but Skip told me to take it easy."
Jazz Chisholm Jr. meets with the media and says that he hopes to be back in action tomorrow after exiting today's game with a right hamstring cramp. pic.twitter.com/X4nYANzugI
— Bally Sports Florida: Marlins (@BallyMarlins) August 5, 2023
Chisholm Jr. left the game yesterday after cramping up in his hamstring while trying to steal a base. There’s no telling as to whether or not he will be back in today’s game. Consider him DTD with the real possibility that he spends time on the Injured List.
Rowdy Tellez – 1B Milwaukee Brewers
A couple things left over from pre-game this afternoon:
Craig Counsell said Rowdy Tellez is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Class AAA Nashville.
He also confirmed LHP Justin Wilson's season is over due to that ill-timed left lat injury.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) August 5, 2023
Tellez seems to be healed from his forearm injury and the stitches he needed to heal a massive gash in his hand. Now, he’ll work to get himself back into game shape with some rehab.
Mason Miller – SP Oakland Athletics
#Athletics Mason Miller just threw his fourth bullpen session. He's throwing all of his pitches and everything's feeling good. He said he'll face live hitters next week and reaffirmed his goal is to pitch again this season.
— Sonja Chen 陈星雅 (@SonjaMChen) August 5, 2023
Miller continues to progress with the hope of returning this season. The Athletics will continue to take things slowly with one of their best prospects.
Brandon Marsh – OF Philadelphia Phillies
Brandon Marsh just ran into the center field wall and has now been removed from the game😳pic.twitter.com/A6mOPzxQs6
— The Game Day MLB (@TheGameDayMLB) August 5, 2023
The hope is that everything is okay, but Marsh had to be removed after this scary incident. There have been reports that Marsh himself is very optimistic about his knee, but I admittedly could not get the link in the video to work.
Anthony DeSclafani – SP/RP San Francisco Giants
Anthony DeSclafani will receive a PRP injection in right elbow, won’t throw for 6-8 weeks. That almost certainly ends his season.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) August 5, 2023
DeSclafani has been out of action with a right elbow flexor strain and will ultimately miss most of the remainder of the season.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Shane McClanahan will fly to LA on Sunday for a Monday appointment with Dr. Neal Elattrache, one of several specialists he is expected to see to determine cause/severity/treatment of forearm tightness
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) August 5, 2023
This is an ominous sign of what could be coming. The Rays can ill-afford to lose their best pitcher this late in the season, but they’ve shown resiliency before. While we don’t want to prematurely guess, it sounds like it’s a serious injury with long ramifications involved. That said, the professionals will decide the cause and the cure.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers
Nathan Eovaldi said he is pain-free after dialing up the intensity over 40 throws at 75 feet. Just needs to be built back up. #Rangers
— Jeff Wilson (@JeffWilsonTXR) August 5, 2023
This is the first positive news that we’ve seen regarding Eovaldi in quite some time. Here’s hoping it’s the first of many news items in that same vein.
Danny Jansen – C Toronto Blue Jays
John Schneider said Danny Jansen complained his wrist was a little bit sore going back to that hit by pitch at Rogers Centre:
“We wanted to be careful with him. He's kind of day to day, but we expect him to be fine.”#BlueJays
— Hazel Mae (@thehazelmae) August 6, 2023
It would appear that Jansen will be DTD for now. Chances are that he’s back in the lineup soon enough barring some unforeseen setbacks.
