2023 Fantasy Football: Week 9 Tight End Rankings (Saturday Update!)

Trey McBride and Dalton Kincaid broke out in Week 8! The young tight ends posted season-best performances, with McBride finishing as the week’s top tight end and Kincaid following closely behind as the TE5. Both tight ends should continue to roll this week and rank as top-eight options in my Week 9 tight end rankings.

Fortunately, there aren’t many injuries affecting the rankings this week. But bye weeks will take a toll, with Sam LaPorta, George Kittle, and Evan Engram being the fantasy-relevant tight ends on the shelf in Week 9.

Injuries to monitor for Week 9

• Darren Waller will likely miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury. Daniel Bellinger will be the Giants’ top tight end in the interim.
• Gerald Everett didn’t suit up in Week 8 due to a hip injury. If he misses another week, Donald Parham Jr. is a solid fill-in, especially in a favorable matchup against the Jets. UPDATE: Everett logged a full practice on Thursday and is looking likely to play on Monday night.

Tight End Notes

Bye Weeks: DEN, DET, JAX, SF

• Dalton Kincaid stepped into the Bills’ primary tight end role last week and didn’t disappoint. He had his best performance of the season, catching five of seven targets for 65 yards and a touchdown. Up next is a cushy Sunday night matchup against a Bengals team that has allowed the most fantasy points per game to tight ends. They’ve also given up four touchdowns this season to the position, tied for second-most. Kincaid could go off this week and is my TE4 in Week 9.
• Taysom Hill is coming off his best game of the season. The Saints’ Swiss Army knife rushed nine times for 63 yards and two scores, completed one of two passes for 44 yards, and caught a 14-yard pass. Hill finished Week 8 with 22 half-PPR fantasy points and has now put up back-to-back double-digit performances. This week, the Saints host a beatable Bears defense that has given up the fourth-most points on the season. There’s always risk with Hill, but if the Saints continue utilizing him, the upside is worth it.
• Trey McBride killed it in Week 8. He finished as the week’s TE1, catching 10-of-14 targets for 95 yards and a score. He also played 82% of snaps and posted a whopping 39% target rate. McBride’s performance was even more impressive because it came against a stingy Ravens defense. McBride gets another tough matchup in Week 9 against a Browns unit that allows the fewest fantasy points and receiving yards to the position. However, McBride should continue to see high target volume no matter who is under center for Arizona. I like McBride as a top-eight play in Week 9.
• Green Bay’s offense is shaky right now, but there’s room for optimism for Luke Musgrave in Week 9. He faces a favorable opponent in the Rams, who have allowed the second-most fantasy points and receiving yards to tight ends this season. Musgrave is averaging five targets per game over the last three weeks and could be a nice check-down option for Jordan Love this week. Musgrave is a top-tier TE2 with upside for me in Week 9.
