Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, April 23, 2024. In today’s report, there are updates on Ozzie Albies and his quick healing, Merrill Kelly and his ailing shoulder, and Josh Lowe and his successful rehab. All that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
Ozzie Albies – 2B Atlanta Bravs (toe)
#Braves’ Ozzie Albies is progressing quickly from his fractured big toe and has started swinging the bat. Could return as soon as Friday, the day he’s eligible to come off the 10-day IL. If not it’ll be soon after.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) April 22, 2024
This is phenomenal news, as Albies could return later this week. He’s recovered quickly and hasn’t seen the ill effects that he was believed to have seen (ie not wearing a protective boot). Fantasy owners and Braves fans should be prepared for a return at some point this weekend.
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Tommy Henry will start tomorrow, Torey Lovullo says. That means there’s an IL move coming. Lovullo said Merrill Kelly is “most likely” headed to the IL but also that there’s an injury to a reliever.
— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) April 23, 2024
The Diamondbacks revealed earlier in the day that it was in fact a teres major strain, and as a result, this seems like the best course of action. The team will likely be down yet another pitcher this year, though with Kelly, we don’t know for how long. While nothing has yet been made official, this seems like a one-way street here to the Injured List.
Paul Sewald – RP Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)
Torey Lovullo says Paul Sewald will pitch tomorrow in Reno on a rehab assignment
— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) April 22, 2024
Finally, some good news for the Diamondbacks, as it would appear that Sewald is taking a significant step forward in his recovery. A rehab assignment for relievers is typically shorter in length, though no timeline has yet been set.
Blaze Alexander – SS Arizona Diamondbacks
Blaze Alexander says he’s still feeling a little discomfort in his hamstring but he’s available off the bench tonight. No structural damage.
— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) April 22, 2024
While Alexander did not play in last night’s game, the fact that he was available speaks volumes here.
Tampa Bay Rays – Team Update
Lots of Rays injury updates (besides Pete to IL):
Taj Bradley should be heading to Durham soon. Same goes with Aranda and DeLuca.
All reports are good on Josh Lowe, just didn’t have a Spring Training so Cash said they are mindful of that.
BLowe nothing significant to report.…
— Evan Closky (@ECloskyWTSP) April 22, 2024
A lot to unpack here. First, Taj Bradley (pectoral) threw 62 pitches over an extended Spring training game and looked good in the process. He will now transfer over to a rehab assignment after experiencing nothing out of the ordinary. As for Josh Lowe (oblique), it looks as if his time with Triple-A Durham is more about getting in reps than anything else. He has batted .300 with one home run over ten at-bats thus far. Finally, Brandon Lowe (oblique) doesn’t appear close to a return, as he’s been a slow healer throughout his career.
Shane Baz – SP Tampa Bay Rays (elbow/oblique)
Shane Baz is also pitching in a couple of days for 2 innings in an extended game.
— Evan Closky (@ECloskyWTSP) April 22, 2024
Baz continues to work hard as he recovers from Tommy John surgery and two oblique setbacks. He seems primed to return at some point in May, hence his not being transferred over to the 60-day Injured List.
Pete Fairbanks – RP Tampa Bay Rays (nerve)
This just in: The #Rays have placed closer Pete Fairbanks on the 15-day injured list with a nerve-related issue. RHP Kevin Kelly called up from Durham.
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) April 22, 2024
Fairbanks was placed on the Injured List yesterday, but the team didn’t provide much more information than the aforementioned details. In his absence, Jason Adam is more than capable of being the team’s closer.
Wade Miley – SP Milwaukee Brewers (elbow inflammation)
LHP Wade Miley placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 19, with left elbow inflammation.
RHP Tobias Myers recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
1B Jake Bauers reinstated from the bereavement list.

— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) April 22, 2024
Miley said that he would get imaging done today because this injury feels different than others from his past. His ominous interview had a feeling of nervousness and sadness. With this and other injuries in recent years, there is a chance that at 37 years old, he may have thrown his last pitch in baseball.
Austin Hays – OF Baltimore Orioles (calf), Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles (knee)
Orioles injury news:
-Austin Hays was placed on the injured list with a left calf strain. Brandon Hyde said he should be ready to return after his 10-day stint
-Ryan Mountcastle is dealing with a "little bit of left knee soreness", which explains why he's out today.
— Brent Maguire (@bmags94) April 22, 2024
Hays was hoping to avoid the Injured List, but alas, here he is. He has struggled all season to get going, so hopefully some time off will help him collect himself. The team is also hopeful that this is a minimum absence. As for Mountcastle, there has been no word if last night’s absence will be a one-off or if it will last over multiple games. We should know more today, though the team did say that it was a precautionary move.
Miami Marlins – Team Update
Sandy play catch 2day
Eury range motion
Puk treatment
Simpson eval 2day
Bethancourt w/team
Burger better, eval to start hitting
Chargois pitch again 2morrow with Triple-A
Edwards chain but no baseball activities
Garrett threw bullpen yday, another next few days #Marlins— Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) April 22, 2024
A lot to go through here. First, Sandy Alcantara (Tommy John) playing catch is a good sign of progression. It is a few steps ahead of Eury Perez (Tommy John) who just had his surgery. That said, both are on their respective journeys back. As for A.J. Puk (shoulder fatigue), he is getting treatment after having just been placed on the Injured List. The team will want to be cautious with such an injury to not overuse the shoulder. Jake Burger (intercostal) getting re-evaluated is the first step for him as he tries to return as soon as possible. If he is cleared to start hitting, it will likely start with some low-impact types of swings. Finally, Braxton Garrett (shoulder) throwing a bullpen is a good sign for him since he was recently shut down. If he feels good after this, another bullpen will be on tap.
Frankie Montas – SP Cincinnati Reds (forearm contusion)
The #Reds today recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Casey Legumina and placed on the 15-day injured list RHP Frankie Montas (right forearm contusion). pic.twitter.com/Mte3tyKgdI
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) April 22, 2024
Montas was hit by a comebacker on Sunday, and the team didn’t take long to replace him in the lineup. He does not have any fractures or broken bones but is instead dealing with significant bruising. Once the contusion subsides and he can throw again, it should be a quick return to the Reds’ rotation.
Keibert Ruiz – C Washington Nationals (influenza)
Ruiz will likely need some time for a rehab assignment. After having lost so much weight, the team is worried that his body won’t be able to handle the rigors of being behind the plate for nine innings. It’s an incredible transformation here and one that may change who he is even at the plate.
