Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, May 24, 2024. In today’s edition, the White Sox gave major updates on both Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert, Nick Lodolo is close to a return, and can anyone make sense of what the Braves are doing with Austin Riley? All of that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Friday, May 24, 2024.
Eloy Jimenez – OF Chicago Whits Sox (hamsting)
Getz said a month or so for Eloy in terms of extended absence on the White Sox broadcast
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) May 24, 2024
During an interview before the game, manager Pedro Grifol said that Jimenez “beat up his hamstring really bad” and will have an extended absence. During the Whit Sox game itself, Getz came to clarify and bring some sort of timeline. Of course, Jimenez is a frequent flyer on the Injured List and has spent extensive time there. There is a significant chance that he stays here even longer than the one month and doesn’t return until after the All-Star Break. Stay tuned.
Luis Robert – OF Chicago White Sox (hip)
Pedro Grifol said Luis Robert Jr. will play a couple more complex-league games in Arizona before heading to Charlotte at weekend’s end and getting into Triple-A games come Tuesday. From there, it’s a matter of getting him enough at-bats to get his timing down before he returns.

Grifol has set out the long-range plan for Robert, and it doesn’t appear to be that complicated. He will continue to get at-bats in the complex-league before heading up to Triple-A Charlotte. Once there, it’s all a matter of getting his timing back. Based on all of that, it would appear that he is all but healthy and that his hip feels fine. There is evidence of that assumption as he did hit a mammoth home run in the complex league the other day. Still, with a long injury history, one never knows with Robert.
Blake Snell – SP San Francisco Giants (paternity)
Blake Snell went on the paternity list, Nick Avila is back from minors. Snell should be back in time for next start against Phillies.

Snell will be away from the team as he welcomes a new addition to his family. They are all wished the very best.
John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles (forearm)
The Orioles have made the following roster moves:
– Recalled RHP Jonathan Heasley from Triple-A Norfolk.
– Placed LHP John Means on the 15-day Injured List (left forearm strain).— Dan Connolly (@danconnolly2016) May 23, 2024
Means has been sent to the Injured List for an injured forearm strain. This is the same area in which he had surgery to repair it years ago. While it’s discouraging to see that Cade Povich was not called up for his debut, there is still hope as Means’ turn through the rotation will take place after the weekend. He could still be called up then and is someone to monitor.
Jon Gray – SP Texas Rangers (groin), Cody Bradford – SP Texas Rangers (ribs)
Gray to IL, Jesus Tinoco purchased, Bradford to 60 day IL
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) May 23, 2024
The only good news out of this is that Gray did not suffer an arm injury. The diagnosis has been defined as a mild groin strain, so there is an opportunity for this to be a short and minimal stay on the Injured List. That being said, Gray does have a long history of injuries, so anything can happen. As for Bradford, he will now miss extended time after a recent setback.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics (wrist)
A’s moves:
– OF Daz Cameron selected from Triple-A Las Vegas
– OF Esteury Ruiz place on 10-day IL (strained left wrist)
– INF Jordan Diaz designated for assignment— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) May 23, 2024
Ruiz injured his wrist at the beginning of May and has been in an out of the A’s lineup since then. That being said, his inconsistent playing time could also be because of how poorly he has played all season. It is unclear how long he will be away from the team.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds (groin), TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds (thumb)
TJ Friedl is back to hitting off flips and continues to progress. He’s working toward getting back to taking batting practice soon.
Nick Lodolo’s bullpen went well yesterday. He’ll throw again on Saturday and is aiming to return on Monday.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 23, 2024
The good news is that Lodolo seems to be close to a return, regardless of when. If Saturday’s throwing session seems fine, he looks bound to start the week off for the Reds. As for Friedl, look for him to start a rehab assignment if he can get to the point of batting practice. He seems to be trending in the right direction, though his timeline is a little vague.
Jake Fraley – OF Cincinnati Reds (hand)
Fraley still has swelling on the outside of his right hand from the HBP on Tuesday. He said he was going to try and take some swings to test it today.
— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) May 23, 2024
Fraley’s hand must have been okay because he entered the game as a pinch runner. He did receive an at-bat, but this is a positive sign nonetheless.
Austin Riley – 3B Atlanta Braves (intercostal strain)

Riley was able to take groundballs yesterday as he continues to try and make his return to the team without going to the Injured List. The Braves are the only ones who know what they’re doing in this unprecedented series of events. He last played a game on May 12.
