This week’s edition of Dynasty Baseball Buys features a prospect on the rise who is still widely available in dynasty leagues and a shortstop steadily improving in his sophomore year with loads of potential. The dynasty baseball sells include a top prospect who doesn’t have the most fantasy friendly game and a pitcher who has been a bit on the lucky side this season. Dynasty Baseball Buys
Zach Neto, SS, Los Angeles Angels
It wouldn’t be fair to judge Neto based on his rookie season. He had a .225 average with nine home runs, 34 RBI, 38 runs, and five stolen bases in 329 plate appearances. He was called up to the big leagues after playing in less than 50 games in the minor leagues, where he slashed .321/.410/.551. Neto is a former first-round draft pick. He was selected 13th overall by the Angels in 2022. He slashed .403/.500/.751 for his college career. Neto certainly has the pedigree to become a fantasy star.
Neto isn’t exactly tearing the cover off the ball right now, but he is showing improvement in his sophomore season. He has upped his batting average to .249 with 11 home runs and 11 stolen bases. Five of his home runs have come in his last 24 games. He also has an .807 OPS over the last month. A 20 HR/20 SB season could be in store for the shortstop. I think he his just scratching the surface of his potential and is a solid dynasty baseball buy at his current price.
Charles McAdoo, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates
McAdoo was drafted in the third round of the 2023 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He didn’t get a lot of hype coming out of San Jose State University. You won’t find him on any of the mainstream preseason top-100 prospect lists. McAdoo slashed .302/.412/.510 in his first taste of professional ball last season. Even after a successful debut, McAdoo was still somewhat considered an unheralded prospect coming into this year.
McAdoo has certainly started to make a name for himself this season. He has slashed .327/.413/.569 across High-A and Double-A. McAdoo was promoted to Double-A last month, where he has hit three home runs and has a 1.022 OPS in his first 10 games. He also has 15 stolen bases in 303 plate appearances. His dynasty stock is on the rise and he should be vaulting up the prospect ranks. Beat the crowd and pick him up in your dynasty league if he’s still available.
Dynasty Baseball Sells
Colson Montgomery, SS, Chicago White Sox
Montgomery was the 22nd overall selection by the Chicago White Sox in the 2021 draft. In 2023, he was ranked as a consensus top-40 prospect by Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus and MLB.com. This season he was ranked as a top-15 prospect by those same three sites, with MLB.com ranking him inside their top-10. To say the least, expectations are extremely high for Montgomery.
However, it has been a nightmare of a season for Montgomery. He is currently slashing .211/.328/.374 in Triple-A. He had under a 20% K-Rate in each of his three previous minor league seasons, but he is striking out at a 30% clip this year. Montgomery has very little speed in his profile. He has only swiped nine bags in 258 career games. His power numbers aren’t very exciting either. He has a career .159 ISO and has averaged 12.7 home runs per 500 plate appearances for his minor league career. Montgomery’s hit tool is a question mark too as he is a .260 career hitter. Montgomery hasn’t displayed a very fantasy-friendly game in his minor league career and for this reason, I’d recommend him as a dynasty baseball sell.
Cristopher Sanchez, SP, Philadelphia Phillies
Sanchez had a very respectable fantasy season last year. He put together a 3.44 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 99.1 innings. He has followed that up with another stellar start to this season, compiling a 2.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, along with 79 strikeouts in 93.1 innings. Sanchez ranks in the top 5 in ERA among qualified pitchers, which puts him ahead of Tarik Skubal, Tyler Glasnow, and Zack Wheeler.
It has been a terrific season, but there are some troubling signs for the Phillies pitcher. His xERA is 3.33 and his SIERA is 3.31, both are nearly a full run higher than his actual ERA, which suggests a regression could be looming. Another ominous sign for Sanchez is his K/9. His 7.6 K/9 is the lowest of his career. He has allowed only one home run this year in 93.1 innings, which seems unsustainable. Last season he allowed 16 home runs in roughly the same amount of innings. I think it would be wise to sell high on Sanchez at this time in dynasty leagues.
