The State of the 2024 Tight End Position for Fantasy Football
Over the last five seasons, just nine total tight ends have averaged 15.0 or more fantasy points per game in Points-per-reception leagues. Travis Kelce makes up four of those nine tight ends from 2019 to 2022. Kelce has been atop tight end rankings and the king of the position since Patrick Mahomes took over as the Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback in 2018. However, last year, the gap between Travis Kelce and a handful of others shrunk considerably. Even with more competition to be the league’s best, Kelce nor any other tight end averaged 15.0 or more points per game in 2023.
Heading into 2024, it’s not out of the ordinary to see Travis Kelce in varying spots within the top five of tight end rankings. Veterans like Mark Andrews and George Kittle are still very much a threat to finish as the overall TE1, but it’s the up-and-coming players like Sam LaPorta, Trey McBride, and Dalton Kincaid that everyone wants a piece of. Fantasy football managers are all looking for the next big thing. Thankfully, after a bit of a drought, there are plenty of tight ends to draft comfortably as starters in fantasy football.
Typically, most of the players near the top of tight end rankings average the same amount of points as a low-end WR2 or high-end WR3. So, especially if your league only requires you start one, you can wait a bit to draft your starter. Obviously, if your league implements tight end premium scoring (more points for tight end receptions or other stats), then you’re going to want to raise these guys in your own overall rankings.
