Top Picks for the 2025 John Deere Classic

The players will be heading west after the Rocket Classic last week in Detroit. Next up on the schedule is the  John Deere Classic being held in Silvis, Illinois.

It will be the 54th edition of the tournament, with Davis Thompson defending the title he won at last year’s event.

The John Deere classic will be in a celebratory mood after winning the “Most Engaged Community” and “Best Sponsor Integration” awards at the PGA’s annual meetings in December last year. The event, accustomed to winning awards, has won the “Most Engaged Community” award nine times now, and it’s the third time for the “Best Sponsor Integration” title. One of the key reasons for their success was to start the “Concerts on Course” initiative to engage with the fans more. The tournament now runs a concert that weekend with top rock band. Counting Crows was the headliner at last year’s event.

Along with the fan appeal, the John Deere Classic has also raised $191 million for various charities since 1971!

2025 John Deere Classic

The course is a par 71 and 7289 yards long, with the record low occurring in 2024 by Davis Thompson, winning by four shots at -28.

A risk-reward course featuring elevation changes, stunning scenery, and the beautiful Rock River running along the southeast corner of the course.

This tournament is a difficult one to predict, with the highest-ranked player being Ben Griffiths at 17th on the official world golf rankings list. Only six players in the top 50 will be teeing up this week. Last year’s winner, Davis Thompson, has only one top-10 to his name this year, and finished tied 34th at the Rocket Classic last week.

Top three picks to win

Jason Day. (+2000)

The Australian-born 37-year-old is in good form coming into this tournament and has the experience to finish in the top ten, having already had four this year. His last outing came at the Travellers, finishing with a 68 to tie 4th overall.

Denny McCarthy (+3000)

Denny has not missed a cut this year on the PGA Tour, having played 16 events to date. An impressive and consistent player, he will be looking for his first win on the tour, and with two top-10s, he can’t be far away.

Michael Thorbjornsen (+3500)

Not easy this week to pick a third, can almost take anyone from the top 10, but I will go with Michael Thorbjornsen. Coming off a top-five finish last week, he has also jumped into the top ten in greens in regulation percentage, with 70,49%. Having only turned pro last year, he’s performed well lately and hasn’t missed a cut since the Velero Texas Open back in April.

Hot Pick: Thriston Lawrence (+6000)

The South African will want to emulate the stunning win from fellow countryman Aldrich Potgieter at last week’s Rocket Classic. The 20-year-old battled with Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk to win on the fifth play-off hole to earn his first win on the PGA tour.

At first glance, Thriston’s form doesn’t scream obvious winner, but his last two results have been promising with a tied 12th at a very testing US Open, and followed it up with a tied 8th at the Rocket Classic last week.
