It’s finally here! The 2025 fantasy football season is upon us. And that can only mean one thing: we get to draft. Everything is great about fantasy football, but nothing can top draft day. Between the excitement, the optimism, and the friendship, it really is the best day of the year. For all of the good feelings it generates, though, your draft isn’t something to take lightly. Quite the opposite in fact. This sets the tone for your entire fantasy football season, so you must treat it with the seriousness it deserves. With that being said, let’s take a look at some fantasy football draft tips to ensure it’s a successful season.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2025 season.
10 Draft Tips to Dominate in 2025
Stay Up to Date on the Offseason News
Quite simply, it’s information overload. The NFL is a never-ending news cycle, and that continues on a year-round basis. Just because you aren’t setting fantasy football lineups or making waiver claims, it doesn’t mean you get to check out following the news. Being a fantasy football manager is a daily endeavor.
In the offseason, there are players who are signed, traded, and released. This puts depth charts into shambles and complete turmoil. And then we get to the NFL Draft with a whole new influx of talent. We also can’t forget about all of the coaching changes, and updated philosophies and game plans that come with it.
No two NFL seasons are alike. Before you can even think about the next steps, and certainly drafting, the most important of our fantasy football draft tips is to stay on top of the offseason news. It’s imperative that you are able to react to everything that has changed from the previous season.
Complete Your Own Ranks
This is your fantasy football team. You have done the research and continue to do the research, so put those thoughts on paper. If you are going to put your name, along with your money and reputation, on your team, then take responsibility. Be confident in your thoughts. It doesn’t mean you can’t, and in fact, you should seek out other opinions. That is all part of the research process.
Rankings are meant to be iterative. Ingest the news and turn them into your rankings. Well, at least the first draft of what will be your ever-evolving rankings.
Review Your Rankings, With Trusted Sources
Rankings are everywhere. After all, you can find rankings from yours truly on this very website. By no means should you do your rankings in a vacuum. After your rankings are complete, pick a few analysts you trust and take a look at their rankings. How do they compare with yours?
This doesn’t mean you should change anything, but it should lead to more research. At that point, there’s nothing wrong with adjusting your rankings. Only do so, though, if you truly believe in the change. Other viewpoints always have value.
Dig Into ADP
There is a big difference between ADP and rankings. ADP (Average Draft Position) is the product of actual drafts. Each draft is its own unique entity, and its ADP is the result of those specific owners. One or two decisions that might differ from the norm could drive totally different draft plans.
You don’t want to be held hostage by ADP, but it’s something you need to hold close and be aware of. One of the important fantasy football draft tips is to use ADP to your advantage. There’s bound to be gaps between your rankings and ADP. Following along can help you to maximize value at every pick, and it can also dictate when to draft a specific player.
However, we do have to add a caveat. You aren’t drafting against ADP; you are drafting against other humans. All it takes is one other fantasy manager to disagree with ADP, and you could miss out on your target. As long as it’s reasonable, follow your rankings. And ADP can help with that.
Stay Up to Date on the Preseason News
With the research done and the rankings completed, the biggest problem is human nature. As we see news come in from Training Camps or results from preseason games, we want to react. Things are happening that we are reading about and/or seeing. We have information, so let’s do something about it.
That’s fine, and we need to be aware of everything that is taking place, but within reason. What happens when players are practicing in shorts is very different than when the lights come on in Week 1 of the regular season. The same can be said for preseason football.
There’s nothing wrong with taking what you see into account, but just do it within reason.
Be Aware of Health Concerns and Injuries
It’s only natural for teams to be cautious in the summer. With no games being played, they have that luxury. But at the same time, there are some real injuries to be aware of. Some are carried over from the prior season, and some are brand new. Either way, we need our players on the field.
There will be enough injuries that occur during the season that we don’t need to take any health concerns into the season.
Know Your League Settings
While some players are better than others, it’s not always that simple in fantasy football. Your rankings are going to look very different if it’s a PPR (point per reception) league or not. How many quarterbacks do you start? Do you get points per first down?
We can go on indefinitely with the myriad of different scoring and roster settings possible. When digging through fantasy football draft tips, it’s important to remember this. Don’t draft as if all leagues are created equal.
Make Your Plan
At this point, you have all of the information. Whether it be your rankings, the ADP, and the league settings, they have all been ingested and reviewed. This is the time when you put pen, or really pencil, to paper.
Break your rankings into tiers, and the hope is that you know your draft position. If you don’t, then your work is that much harder, as you really must consider all options. It might be more of an outline than a plan, but you need to enter the draft room with clear thoughts on how to proceed.
Know the Draft Engine and Default Ranks
Hopefully, this doesn’t come into play, and you are drafting in person. There truly is nothing better. Unfortunately, that’s not always possibl,e and there are many great online solutions. Of course, being the company man here, Fantrax is the best, but the point remains the same.
Before you sit down to draft, you should know what you are working with. If it’s in person, you need to have your rankings, essentially the player pool, in front of you. Online, that is taken care of, but the website will dictate the order in which you see the players. That might not line up with your rankings and could push into decisions that you wouldn’t ordinarily make. The way to manage this is to still work off your ranks and ignore the prepopulated player list. However, your league mates could fall into the same trap. That could work to your advantage.
Also, make sure the technology works and you can easily make picks. It might sound obvious, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Ensure that you can easily search for and draft players without issue.
Pivot
You have followed along with our fantasy football draft tips, and you walk into the draft room ready to draft a winning team. And then the draft starts. Nothing ever goes according to plan, and you can’t factor in the behavior of other humans.
While it’s necessary to have a plan, you can’t let yourself get bogged down by said plan and fall victim to it. Have alternatives and be ready to use them. Don’t stubbornly stick to your plan if your rankings and the draft room tell you otherwise.
Have Fun
As a bonus, it’s important to remember to have fun. Yes, we are chasing championships and cash, but this is still fun. Enjoy everything about the process and remember to have fun.
