Week 2 Quarterback Sleepers and Streamers

Welcome to Week 2 for another edition of the Weekly Quarterback Sleepers and Streamers. Week 1 was a wild ride that reminded us all just how unpredictable Fantasy Football can be! Despite all of our projections and offseason research, it just never quite turns out how you thought it would, does it?

Week 1 Recap

Looking back to my calls in this article last week, I went a solid 3-for-6 on my Sleepers and Streamers.

Dak Prescott, Drake Maye, and Trevor Lawrence probably didn’t win anybody weeks, but it wasn’t all bad. The Cowboys looked better than expected against the Eagles’ D, and I don’t think we can count on two 1-yard touchdown plunges for Javonte every week, so better days should be coming for Dak. Maye played in the rain and put up ok numbers, while Lawrence had to deal with the long delay, and didn’t need to do much with Etienne putting on a show.

On the good side, Daniel Jones is currently the QB3 going into the Monday night game! We also have Herbert as the current QB5 after a great game in Brazil, where he threw the ball much more than expected. Flacco didn’t have a great game and ended the week in the middle of the field, but if you were in a spot where you had to play Flacco, you should be more than happy with his performance, where he had 45 pass attempts and outscored Joe Burrow in the same game.

Current Season Tally: 3-3

Week 2 Quarterback Sleepers:

Kyler Murray vs Carolina Panthers

There’s a good chance that whoever drafted Kyler did so to be their QB1, but I am in plenty of leagues where somebody took him to be their backup quarterback. In Week 1, he only threw for 163 yards against the lowly Saints, adding 38 rushing yards on 7 carries, and 2 passing touchdowns. The game ended up much more competitive than expected, and if you saw those numbers, you might be thinking twice about starting him this week. Don’t!

Getting a home opener against the Panthers should be just what the doctor ordered. He’s already showing more cohesion with Marvin Harrison Jr., and the team had him throwing closer to the line of scrimmage, which I think should help his completion numbers and allow him to chip away at yardage. Plus, he’s always a threat to score on the ground. Play him as a Quarterback 1.

Drake Maye @ Miami Dolphins

Yup, I’m going back to Maye after a pretty average Week 1. Despite the loss, Maye looked good in the opener, attempting 46 passes, and the team… actually looked like an NFL team! Low bar, I know, but after last season, any New England fan would gladly accept the compliment.

After seeing Danny Dimes carve up the Miami last week, I think it’s safe to say that whoever plays against the Dolphins will be appearing on this list every week. Jones threw for 272 and a score, along with 26 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Maye is a much better passer and also has some running chops to him. Add to that the already terrible Miami secondary is now dealing with injuries, and this should be a huge game for Maye.

Week 2 Quarterback Streamers

Matthew Stafford @ Tennessee Titans

There was a lot of focus on Stafford’s health this offseason, but in Week 1, he looked just like his normal self. So long as he stays healthy, he should be one of the steadiest presences all year. Because folks are scared of his viability, though, not many are going to be rostering him long term, so he should be a regular on the Streamer list.

Last week, Stafford threw for 245 yards and 1 touchdown on only 29 attempts. Having Puka and his YAC ability is always going to be a boost for Stafford’s numbers. Having Davante Adams as your second option doesn’t hurt either. Adams only had 51 yards in Week 1, and while it won’t be consistent, he’s going to have some much bigger games going forward. The Titans’ defense doesn’t scare me at all, and if the offense can’t stay on the field again, Stafford should have plenty of opportunity to stuff his stats.

Trevor Lawrence @ Cincinnati Bengals

Lawrence is another player that I’m going to double down on in Week 2 after a disappointing performance. Travis Etienne had a monster game, but almost none of that came on receptions. Going forward, I expect him to be much more of a safety valve for Lawrence, and if he is as explosive as he was in Week 1, that should mean some big catches and runs.

The Bengals offense didn’t look great last week, but that has become somewhat expected for the team, and I think they’ll have no problem scoring on the Jaguars. That means Lawrence is going to need to throw to keep up, and he should be able to on the Bengals’ secondary.  Flacco attempted 45 passes against them last week. While I don’t expect Lawrence to get quite as many, he should still have a big game in Week 2.
