We’re 50 days from Opening Day, and today’s 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up spotlights a fast-moving college arm. Ranked #81 is Hagen Smith, a left-handed starter whose strike-throwing ability and pitch mix have translated quickly to Double-A. Smith doesn’t rely on 80-grade velocity, but his command and sequencing give him a strong foundation as a mid-rotation fantasy starter. The White Sox have pushed him aggressively, and his proximity adds meaningful dynasty appeal.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #81 Hagen Smith
Chicago did not waste time pushing their electric left-hander. After a dominant spring ramp and a quick acclimation period, Hagen Smith reached Double-A at 21 and spent the season doing exactly what was expected, missing bats in bunches. The shape and intimidation translated cleanly to the level, and while the surface line looked strong, the underlying story remained consistent throughout the year. Smith’s ceiling was always going to be determined by how often he found the strike zone.
The stuff played. Smith’s fastball exploded on hitters from the left side with late life and enough carry to beat barrels at the top of the zone. His slider was the separator, tight, late, and consistently uncomfortable, and the bat-missing showed up clearly in the data. Over 75.2 Double-A innings, he ran a 14.4% swinging-strike rate and a 12.85 K/9, nearly four strikeouts per nine better than league average. The run prevention followed the whiffs, with a 3.57 ERA supported by a 3.69 FIP and 3.59 xFIP, all comfortably better than league context. He also kept the ball in the yard at a 0.59 HR/9, pairing strikeouts with manageable contact.

The red flag was the one evaluators anticipated. Smith’s walk rate remained elevated at 6.66 BB/9, and a roughly 2.0 K/BB ratio was the primary limiter on an otherwise dominant profile. The delivery created deception and a tough angle, but it also introduced timing variability, and when he was just off, at-bats extended. He was able to pitch around it because the stuff was that good, but the inefficiency capped innings and inflated pitch counts. The encouraging sign was his contact management. A 43.4% ground-ball rate and limited loud air contact paired well with the swing-and-miss, explaining why his ERA and FIP-based indicators consistently outpaced the raw walk totals.
Starter versus reliever questions followed him throughout the season, but the foundation for starting remained intact. The body, athleticism, and two plus pitches were already present, and the run prevention metrics suggested command did not need to be plus for the profile to hold. Smith did not need to paint edges to succeed, he simply needed to live in the zone more often. When he did, the profile shifted quickly from volatile to overpowering, reinforcing the idea that the remaining development was refinement rather than reinvention.
Fantasy Outlook
For dynasty managers, Smith remains a bet on strikeout volume with an understanding of the WHIP risk. In roto formats, the punchouts and home run suppression can carry value even when walks inflate ratios, and there is legitimate SP2 upside if the BB/9 trims meaningfully. In points leagues, the inefficiency is more punitive, as shorter outings and walks weigh more heavily, but the bat-missing ceiling still plays in strikeout-forward scoring systems. The long-term outlook remains that of a high-strikeout starter, with the path to top-40 starter value tied directly to modest gains in zone consistency rather than any change to the arsenal itself.
Hagen Smith is a key reason for optimism within the White Sox system.
But after an uneven 2025, will he bounce back?
