Deep League Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets for Week 16

The challenge and fun of playing in deep leagues is the need to persevere through injuries and extended slumps of key roster players. The only way to effectively fill those lineup holes on a consistent basis is through smart waiver wire decisions. That’s why we make a concerted effort every week to provide guidance on deep league waiver wire targets to help those competing in 15-team mixed, 12-team AL- or NL-only, or even deeper leagues.

Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 16

15-Team Mixed League Targets

1. Ronny Henriquez, SP/RP, Marlins (28% rostered)

As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. This definitely applies to Ronny Henriquez, who was cast aside earlier this season by the Twins and quickly picked up for use by the Marlins. Fast forward several months, and Henriquez quickly carved through the Twins hitters to secure multiple saves. In fact, Henriquez has been equally as effective lately as the top Twins relievers of Duran and Jax. Over the last two weeks, he has a 1.29 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, and 14.14 K/9. He’s overcome some early missteps to bring his season-long ERA down to 2.85. With four saves in his last seven outings, it’s clear he is currently the leader in the Marlins’ bullpen for saves.

2. Ramon Laureano, OF, Orioles (29% rostered)

Early in Ramon Laureano’s career, he was viewed as a top 100 fantasy baseball asset, given his appealing 20/20 season potential. In fact, in 2019, he reached 24 home runs and 13 steals in just 434 at-bats during his full rookie season with the Athletics. Most impressive about his power and speed production was the great plate discipline that accompanied it, as he had a .340 OBP that season as well. However, over time, the lack of consistent playing time due to recurring injuries caused his strikeout rate to balloon, leading to his demotion in 2022. Now on his fourth team with the Orioles, Laureano is seeing consistent playing time again and making contributions in key counting stats. On the season, he has 10 home runs and three steals in just under 200 at-bats. Quietly, Laureano has been one of the brightest spots for the Orioles this season.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Mitch Garver, C, Mariners (14% rostered)

Before Cal Raleigh became the MVP-caliber hitter that he’s become this season, Mitch Garver was viewed as a model player to aspire toward. Garver has a long history of both producing power and maintaining consistent on-base abilities. Though injuries have plagued Garver in his career and several down years have led to team changes. Now, Garver has found himself in a steady platoon role for the Mariners and is quietly exceeding expectations as of late. Over his last seven games, he’s hitting over .300 and has three home runs. Garver may provide a suitable replacement for a faltering second catcher or prove a valuable handcuff for Raleigh owners.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Yanquiel Fernandez, OF, Rockies (24%)

The Colorado Rockies farm system has had an abundance of high-potential hitting prospects, particularly in the outfield. Yet, over the last few years, none have really panned out into long-term success. Now it’s the power hitting Yanquiel Fernandez’s turn to change that trend, as he was called up this week for his debut. Fernandez has been viewed as a key prospect in the Rockies system for a couple of years now. He’s hit .284 with a .347 OBP at AAA so far this season, and his 13 home runs have netted 39 RBI. His stay may not be long if he falters in the first week, but he’s a low-risk waiver wire addition in at least NL-only leagues for now.
