Dynasty Baseball Report: The Tarik Skubal Trade – What the Tigers’ New Prospects Mean for Your Roster

Whenever a frontline ace changes teams, fantasy managers immediately shift their attention to the prospect package. While Tarik Skubal’s move to the Los Angeles Dodgers dominated the headlines, dynasty league owners should be paying just as much attention to the three young players the Detroit Tigers added in return.

Dynasty Baseball Report: The Tarik Skubal Trade – What the Tigers’ New Prospects Mean for Your Roster

The Tigers acquired two Top 50 overall prospects. A high-ceiling outfielder in Zyhir Hope, along with pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, provides the organization a blend of near-term pitching depth and long-term offensive upside.

From a fantasy perspective, however, the return isn’t balanced. One player has legitimate fantasy star potential, while the other two project as worthwhile investments depending on your league format and patience level.

Zyhir Hope: The Prospect to Target

Fantasy Grade: ★★★★★ (ETA 2027)

If you’re looking for the biggest dynasty winner from this trade, it’s Zyhir Hope.

Hope has steadily climbed prospect rankings over the past two seasons by transforming raw athletic ability into on-field production. His combination of bat speed, developing power, and above-average athleticism gives him one of the more intriguing offensive profiles among outfield prospects in baseball.

Rather than relying solely on physical tools, Hope has shown meaningful progress with his approach at the plate. He’s becoming more selective, driving the baseball with authority to all fields, and showing the type of swing decisions that should allow his offensive game to translate against upper-level pitching.

Fantasy managers are always searching for hitters capable of contributing in every category, and Hope checks many of those boxes. A realistic ceiling includes 25 to 30 home runs while adding enough speed to reach double-digit stolen bases annually. Even if the stolen-base totals settle closer to 15 than 25, his overall offensive profile projects as an impact fantasy outfielder.

Perhaps the biggest boost to his dynasty value is organizational opportunity. The Los Angeles Dodgers consistently field one of baseball’s deepest rosters, making it difficult for prospects to carve out everyday roles. Detroit offers a much cleaner path to regular major league at-bats, increasing Hope’s chances of becoming an everyday fantasy contributor sooner than expected.

Fantasy Ceiling

  • .280 batting average
  • 25-30 home runs
  • 15-20 stolen bases
  • Top-25 fantasy outfielder

River Ryan: Stuff Isn’t the Question

Fantasy Grade: ★★★★☆ (ETA 2026)

In an article published back in May of this year, I featured an up-and-coming pitcher in the Dodgers’ system as my #1 Under-the-Radar Dynasty Prospect.

Thanks to the Tarik Skubal trade, River Ryan is now on the baseball map!

River’s raw arsenal has never been in doubt. Ryan attacks hitters with a lively fastball that generates swings and misses, pairing it with quality secondary offerings capable of missing bats at the highest level. On pure talent alone, he has the repertoire of a mid-rotation major league starter.

The challenge has been staying healthy.

Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his development, making it difficult for fantasy managers to confidently project his workload over a full season. That uncertainty creates both risk and opportunity. If Ryan proves durable, he has enough strikeout ability to become a valuable fantasy starter. If durability remains an issue, his power arsenal could eventually play at the back end of a bullpen, where he could develop into a high-leverage reliever with closer upside.

Neither outcome should surprise evaluators.

For dynasty managers, Ryan represents the classic boom-or-bust investment. The upside remains attractive, but expectations should be tempered until he demonstrates consistent health.

Fantasy Ceiling

  • No. 2 – 3 fantasy starter (will be a #1 if he remains healthy)
  • Strikeout-per-inning potential
  • Possible future closer if moved to relief

Brady Smith: The Quiet Sleeper

Fantasy Grade: ★★★★☆ (ETA 2029)

While Hope receives the headlines and Ryan draws attention because of his stuff, Brady Smith may quietly become one of the more interesting developmental arms in Detroit’s system.

Smith doesn’t rely on overpowering velocity alone. Instead, his profile is built around athleticism, improving command, and a repertoire that continues to mature. His fastball provides a solid foundation, while his secondary pitches have taken meaningful steps forward during his professional development.

Pitchers with this type of profile often take longer to reach the major leagues, but they can ultimately provide more stable fantasy value than higher-risk power arms. If Smith continues refining his command and maintains the quality of his off-speed pitches, he has a realistic path toward becoming a dependable middle-of-the-rotation starter.

That may not generate immediate excitement in dynasty leagues, but reliable starters capable of posting quality ratios are increasingly valuable in today’s fantasy landscape.

Fantasy Ceiling

  • Mid-rotation starter
  • Above-average WHIP
  • Strong strikeout totals
  • Consistent fantasy SP4 with upside for more

Dynasty Rankings

1. Zyhir Hope

The clear fantasy prize of the trade. Hope possesses the highest offensive ceiling and benefits from a more favorable path to playing time in Detroit.

2. River Ryan

Ryan arguably owns the best pure stuff among the pitchers in the deal, but his injury history introduces considerable risk. The talent is undeniable, yet dynasty managers should prepare for a wide range of outcomes.

3. Brady Smith

A longer-term investment whose combination of command and improving secondary pitches gives him a chance to outperform expectations.

Final Thoughts

Detroit approached this trade with both present and future in mind, but dynasty fantasy managers should view the return through a different lens.

Zyhir Hope has the tools to become an impact fantasy hitter and should immediately move onto the radar in every dynasty league. Brady Smith offers intriguing long-term value for patient managers looking to stockpile pitching prospects, while River Ryan remains one of the more intriguing yet volatile investments in the minors.

Years from now, this trade may ultimately be remembered less for the ace who changed uniforms and more for whether Hope develops into the middle-of-the-order cornerstone many evaluators believe he can become.
