MLB Injury Report

Atlanta Braves – Team Update

This is not how the Braves and their fans planned out their season when it began. So many longstanding injuries that would have derailed a worse team, but here they are in the thick of it, playing for a World Series title. Of note, this was written before it was announced that Reynaldo Lopez would go on the Injured List with that left knee injury. It’s also worth mentioning that both he and the team don’t believe this to be a major injury requiring much more than the minimum time away. As for Spencer Schwellenbach, he will be heading back to Florida to throw some more bullpens, and from there it is believed that he will be ready for a rehab assignment. It will more than likely be an extensive one where he works on regaining his velocity, but his health is more real-life important than for fantasy purposes. Hurtson Waldrep, requiring a second opinion, is likely done for the season, as is Spencer Strider, who will look to be ready for Opening Day.

Shohei Ohtani – SP/DH, Los Angeles Angels

This would be a significant first step on the road to recovery for Ohtani, as he is slated to play catch this week. That said, he does need close to a full rebuild before he pitches again for the Dodgers. His regular-season contributions will be close to solely based on his hitting.

Dalton Rushing – C, Los Angeles Dodgers

Rushing was a late scratch, and it sounds like this was done more for precautionary reasons than anything. The team starts a three-game series at Chicago today against the Cubs, and it’s unclear how long this will linger. Stay tuned.

Jackson Jobe – SP, Detroit Tigers

Jobe is up to 69 pitches and hit 100 miles per hour in the first inning of yesterday’s rehab game. He seems almost primed and ready to take over for the traded Tarik Skubal, but the team has made mention that they will not rush things just because of Skubal’s absence from the team. Still, he is worth stashing for the final six weeks of the season.

Matt Chapman – 3B, San Francisco Giants

Chapman last played at the end of June, and more than a month later, he hasn’t shown much improvement. With a trip to the specialist, the hope is that the cause for the constant pain will be discovered and the healing process can begin. Whether or not that means surgery remains to be seen.

Clay Holmes – SP, New York Mets

Holmes was able to labor through 73 pitches, displaying his readiness to return. Results aside, he should be activated soon. In terms of where he’ll be pitching, he’s been a prime trade candidate for a while, and some teams sent scouts to watch this game yesterday. It’s fair to say that his next game could be with a new organization.

Braden Montgomery – OF, Chicago White Sox

This doesn’t appear to be anything significant, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, he should avoid the Injured List. Be sure to keep him in your lineups this week.

Nick Lodolo – SP, Cincinnati Reds

Lodolo threw 50 pitches during Friday’s bullpen session, which was a productive day on two fronts. First, he was able to increase his workload to that number, and he tested out a new grip to help prevent future blisters. With that in mind, and the hope that these blisters stay gone, there’s a chance for him to bounce back here for the final six weeks and be someone worth rostering. He is also a nice buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues.

Sacramento Athletics – Team Update

Kurtz has been out of action since last Wednesday, when he was hit on the hand with a pitch. The team has been taking things slowly, but with him seeing a hand specialist, there’s a chance that this escalates into something more. As of today, he will have missed five days, which is where the retroactive length starts to increase. As such, if he does go on the Injured List, it might be today, after his meeting. As for Jacob Wilson, the good news is that he should be back this week. The bad news is that for however talented Wilson is at hitting, he just can’t manage to stay healthy.

San Diego Padres – Team Update

From the looks of things, the Padres might have both Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove back in the lineup for the final month of the season. They are currently one game back in the Wild Card race and are in need of some reinforcements in their rotation. Assuming there are no setbacks here or restrictions upon their return, this could be the boost they need to elevate them into and through the playoffs.

Kyle Harrison – SP, Milwaukee Brewers
