No draft is more full of promise and potential than a fresh Dynasty startup. If you’re like me and only play keeper/dynasty and redraft, you get used to focusing on one-year value and first-year players and little in between besides checking in on your guys and scouring the waiver wire. Or maybe you’re new to Dynasty and haven’t thought about prospects that aren’t about to be called up. The clean slate of a new league presents infinite possibilities, which is maybe too many. How do you approach it?
Dynasty Baseball StartUp Strategy
The Win-Now Strategy
The simplest strategy is to ignore that it’s Dynasty and just play like it’s redraft. The big reason to do this is that Flags Fly Forever, and you don’t know if your league will get a 10th, fifth or even second season. Go for it. You can take advantage of the format by taking the discount on over-30 players and build a formidable squad of olds. You don’t take a true prospect until your starting lineup is full. The downside is that if you don’t win, you might end up in a long rebuild very soon. These are also the teams that quit leagues the most in my experience as a commissioner. Don’t be that guy.
The Prospect Hound
The opposite extreme is to value age over all else. You take stars under 25 in the first few rounds, but you’re gonna break the seal on prospects and try to snag five of the top 10. You’ll fill your farm before your CI slot and end up filling out your roster with former top prospects who haven’t hit yet. This strategy can feel like Christmas, with a pile of shiny boxes that could be everything you’ve ever wished for. The downside is that some of those boxes will turn out to be empty, and some will be a 5-pack of plain white t-shirts. Even if the league lasts, you might not be competitive for several years. You also could end up with such a dominant team that everyone else quits after your three-peat.
The In-Between
I get the appeal of the extreme strategies, but I personally prefer a more balanced approach. I want to build a core of players in their prime that will be good for several years. Target established players under 30 for the first 5-10 rounds and avoid prospects for the most part. You’re building a team to be competitive for the next five years, which will give you some runway before needing help from your farm. You take a 31-year-old starter with a track record over a young guy who hasn’t put it together yet. You can ignore age once you get to filling out your last handful of starting slots and bench.
When you do take prospects, you can take bigger risks and players with longer waits. Recent high school draftees and pitching prospects are your sweet spot. Read up on international signings too, and plan on churning through around five a year, panning for the next Jesus Made, Luis Peña, and Josue De Paula. You’ll have work to do to make your farm produce, but that’s part of the fun. That said, you probably won’t see many of those guys produce; they’re probably trade fodder once they reach the top 50 to plug roster holes. If you’re savvy enough, you can be a title contender for a decade and replace your stars when they age out. You won’t likely avoid a rebuild, but when that day comes, you should have enough talent to sell off and restock.
The Chalk
If you don’t have a lot of prep time, you can always just draft off a set of Dynasty-specific player rankings. Besides being my platform of choice for a decade before I started writing here, FanTrax also has you covered with our Top-500 Dynasty Rankings available for free. Most subscription prospect sites will have such rankings too – I use Baseball Prospectus’s ranks myself, and they update every few months.
