MLB Injury Report – American League Pitching

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, July 17, 2025. With the All-Star Break pause, we’ll take some time to examine the current injuries in baseball, position by position. In today’s edition, the pitching landscape of the American League will be examined, as all of the major fantasy-relevant injuries at various positions will be listed for your reference. Keep in mind that injuries change and get updated rapidly, though during the All-Star Break, news tends to slow down. Let’s go.

MLB Injury Report

Baltimore Orioles

Grayson Rodriguez

The last substantial update that we had regarding Rodriguez was from two weeks ago, when he threw a 25-pitch bullpen session. One would think that since there were no reports on him feeling stiff or achy afterward, he would have continued throwing, though that might not be the case. Sometimes, no news is good news, and perhaps that’s what’s happening here, but the Orioles have been rather quiet regarding any step forward for him as of late. There is no firm timeline on a return for Rodriguez, and with the team unlikely to make the playoffs, he may not be back for much of anything this season.

Zach Eflin

Judging by this report, Eflin won’t be ready for the start of the second half. That said, he could slot in as their fourth or fifth starter post-break and start for them next week.

Cleveland Guardians

Shane Bieber

Bieber’s latest appearance was significant, as he had suffered renewed soreness back in June. After that minor setback, he looked sharp here, though it’s important to remember his level of competition. Over the next few days, how his body reacts to this will be important, but if he’s pain-free, it looks like the Guardians will be able to push further. He seems like he’ll be ready to return in August, though it remains to be seen if the Guardians will be competing for a playoff spot by then.

Detroit Tigers

Sawyer Gipson-Long

The Tigers may take the cautious approach and only use Gipson-Long this weekend if they need another arm. Otherwise, this feels like a return next week is in the works. He remains someone to watch in dynasty formats.

Houston Astros

Spencer Arrighetti

Arrighetti has been slowly improving and getting himself ready for this rehab assignment. It’s good news that his broken hand has seemingly healed, and the length of this rehab assignment will be dependent on him being able to find his groove. He hasn’t pitched competitively in almost a year, so he will need some time to ramp up. Consider this rehab assignment (and possibly his first few starts) to be like his Spring Training.

Kansas City Royals

Cole Ragans

The last major update on Ragans was this from almost two weeks ago. By now, he should have started throwing, and the four-week shutdown plan should have been over. With this being the All-Star Break, injury updates are few and far between. We should find out something soon. Stay tuned.

Minnesota Twins

Zebby Matthews

This is something to monitor, as Matthews could be ready to return to the Twins’ rotation. He looked sharp and effective in his only outing. Regardless of whether he needs another rehab start, he’s just about ready. He’s one to stash if possible.

Bailey Ober

All things considered, this is good news. If Ober’s hip can stay pain-free and not be a problem, there’s a chance that his second-half numbers look closer to his 2024 breakout. His setback-free status will be key to his return.

Pablo Lopez

This was a very detail-oriented update on Lopez, though it did take place weeks ago, and a lot could have happened since then. However, until Lopez’s shoulder is fully healed, he likely won’t extend himself into bullpens or throwing pitches at close to 100% intensity. That being said, after the All-Star Break, we might get some positive news regarding his progress.

New York Yankees

Luis Gil

Gil looked great in this outing, where he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings of work. That said, seeing as this will be a conservative build-up, one would have to guess two more rehab outings before a call-up is made official. He is worth stashing in all leagues.

Tampa Bay Rays

Shane McClanahan

These were the details of McClanahan’s first rehab start, which, all things considered, should be a huge step forward. Ignore his velocity readings, as this was his first time pitching competitively in a very long time. Not walking anyone is a big positive, as he seemingly had control and command of the strike zone. There have been no reports of any recurring pain, so it would appear that all systems are a-go here, as he moves forward. That said, expect a long, extended, and full rehab assignment.

Texas Rangers

Tyler Mahle

That one-week estimate should be in effect at some point this week, possibly once the Rangers return from the Break. It remains to be seen what sort of timeline Mahle will be on, given that his injuries happen with frequency.
