MLB Injury Report

Jacob Misiorowski – SP Milwaukee Brewers

Arguably, the biggest news of the weekend came from something that doesn’t seem to concern the Brewers at all. It was announced that Misiorowski hadn’t bounced back well from his last start and was suffering from arm fatigue. Nobody within the organization seemed to be overly worried, but here I am trying to make sense of it all in order to calm my nerves. Anytime any pitcher has arm fatigue, it should definitely be noted, and their status should be flagged as something more troublesome.

Is it because he’s thrown too much? Too hard? Is there an underlying injury that hasn’t been addressed? All of those things could apply here, unfortunately. He throws incredibly hard and for long outings, and as a result, he could have something going on that hasn’t been identified yet. If you roster him, you cannot disregard any of these red flags, simply because we’ve seen it many times before, where player health can fade fast. I recommend having a backup plan in place, just in case this goes from where we are to another bad place altogether.

Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers

Speaking of backup plans, it feels like the Brewers will need a permanent one here for Woodruff, whose move to the 60-Day Injured List means he cannot return to the team until at least the beginning of September. And even then, that feels like a long shot, given that his injury history, compounded with the current right anterior shoulder capsule injury, makes a return this season far from certain.

Blake Snell – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

Snell is set to start a rehab assignment next week after having thrown multiple bullpen sessions, both live and solitary in nature. With four or five appearances on tap, a mid-to-late August return seems likely, assuming no setbacks. He’s worth stashing in a couple of weeks if you can acquire him for cheap.

Edwin Diaz – RP Los Angeles Dodgers

Diaz began his rehab assignment on Saturday with Single-A Ontario and didn’t miss a beat. His first two batters struck out, offering a good sign that his arm hasn’t dropped in effectiveness. It’s unclear how he feels physically after having pitched, but this is all a step in the right direction. It will be interesting to see when he advances to tougher competition.

Bo Bichette – SS New York Mets

This is a situation to monitor, as Bichette will be using the next few days off to get himself a full reset. While that’s good in theory on paper, having that time actually be enough is another story altogether. It was noted that the 28-year-old took some foul balls off of his legs, knees and ankles, all while dealing with some other things below the belt, resulting in him needing additional time. It feels like they are hopeful that nothing more is wrong and that he can come back refreshed, but his extensive lower-body injury history makes this all very noteworthy. Stay tuned for updates.

Ryan Helsley – RP Baltimore Orioles

Good news here, relative to the bigger picture. There is no structural damage done to Helsley’s elbow, and as such, it is just inflammation that is keeping him from throwing again. Once that heals and goes away, he should be able to get back on track to pitching again. Whether or not that happens this season depends on if this plan of attack can stay on course. If it does, then an early-to-mid-September return is in play. However, nothing here is set in stone just yet.

Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds

Lodolo missed six weeks earlier in the season with the same injury, and that cost him six weeks. This isn’t one of those recurring injuries where the team is more cautious than ever to ensure an injury doesn’t repeat itself or cause additional damage. With that in mind, it’s likely that he returns in late August.

Willson Contreras – 1B Boston Red Sox

The good news here is that Contreras’ foot is feeling better, and an additional few days off will only help. He is eligible to return from his suspension this week, and it seems like he will avoid the Injured List altogether.

New York Yankees – Team Update

Max Fried continues to get better with each passing day. It looks like he has completed the live bullpen tier of his recovery and is ready to advance to a rehab assignment. I wouldn’t expect this to be a short one given the nature of the injury and the player involved. As for Carlos Rodon, he is on the front end of his recovery, and he will attempt to advance to a bullpen session of sorts later this week.

Seattle Mariners – Team Update

The only thing to take away from this, concerning Julio Rodriguez, is that this is no minor concussion. He has already surpassed the seven day minium, and while the team hopes for him to be ready, there is no expectation or guarantee that it will happen. As for Brendan Donovan, he is getting closer and should be back soon enough.

Emerson Hancock – SP Seattle Mariners

Hancock took a comebacker off his hand and exited early from Sunday’s game. Whether he needs time on the Injured List still can change over the All-Star Break, but for now it would appear that he’s avoided anything serious other than a bruise.

Zac Gallen – SP Arizona Diamondbacks

Gallen has been off all season, and his results on the field have shown that something isn’t right. He’s had injury scares before, and perhaps now they will be coming through with the need to be corrected. That being said, we should know more over the All-Star Break, as additional testing is expected to be done.
