MLB Injury Report

Konnor Griffin – SS, Pittsburgh Pirates

Griffin had been relegated to designated hitter duties over the last little while because of this injury, and although he found some success, the decision was made to place him on the Injured List and let it heal properly. The team hopes that it will be a short stay and that he can return to the lineup soon enough. In a corresponding move, Ryan O’Hearn was activated in his place.

Elly De La Cruz – SS Cincinnati Reds

This didn’t look good at all, as Cruz exited a game with an injury for the first time in his career. It’s unclear as to the severity of the situation here, but it’s worth noting that he played with and through an injury last year, and his production suffered as a result. If you roster the star, you almost hope that he takes the time he needs to get himself right while on the Injured List so that he can actually play at 100% health the rest of the way.

Garrett Crochet – SP Boston Red Sox

This injury has gone from hope for a minimum stay to now over one month away with a recent setback. Crochet himself said that he doesn’t actually consider this to be a setback, but in reality, it is. He was slated to face live batters tomorrow, and now he won’t because of a completely separate physical issue. It can’t be much clearer than that. What makes this more frustrating is that he couldn’t get himself right in the spring and couldn’t figure out why. Now with a setback and a new injury, this could be something that lingers for quite a while without a known resolution.

Roman Anthony – OF Boston Red Sox

Anthony was shut down from swinging a bat after it was revealed that he has a partially torn ring-finger ligament, about a week after imaging said the opposite. It’s unclear if his session just before this weekend had anything to do with this development, but it’s frustrating nonetheless. With no end in sight to this ongoing saga, fantasy managers need to start planning ahead and not wait for this to settle down. This is now two major injuries in less than a full season of work.

Boston Red Sox – Team Update

It was a rough weekend for the Red Sox and their fans, and the news here added to the weight of it all. Both Ceddanne Rafaela and Willson Contreras are currently sidelined with separate issues that should remain as day-to-day issues, but as with any other injury in baseball, anything can happen. Hopefully we find out some long-term plans regarding both before they start their week.

Mailkel Garcia – 3B Kansas City Royals

Garcia was pulled from Saturday’s game, and a day later, the team doesn’t have conclusive results. The hope is that the delay in some clarity here is not because there is an issue worth assessing, but rather for something different altogether. Manager Matt Quattaro later said that the team would evaluate him today, so there’s a decent chance that we figure this mystery out soon enough. We should know about the diagnosis and decision before they play their next game. Either way, stay tuned.

Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers

Great news here, though this comes with a bit of a warning. For all of his injuries, Seager doesn’t usually go on minor league rehab assignments. In fact, it’s been years since he’s had to do anything like this. Take it however you like, but this must be something not just serious, but also worth monitoring as he moves forward to test out his back. He did have setbacks, so that could be the driving force behind this decision. Either way, while this is good news for a (hopefully) swift comeback, it’s also something worth keeping in the back of your mind too.

Ryan Helsley – RP Baltimore Orioles

Just a few days ago, the news was promising in that it felt like the Orioles closer was taking a big step forward by starting to throw bullpen sessions. Now, after seeing where he’s at, the news comes out that he will need more time to build up, and that they will map out a plan next week. And, as positive as the word hopeful means, when it comes to baseball injuries and their timelines, it often means best-case scenario. As such, it would appear that the best-case scenario for Helsley could mean at some point in June, which could also mean the 30th. And all of that is assuming there are no setbacks, something he is not a stranger to. Perhaps this is a “Davey Downer” take, but this report didn’t instill much confidence in a swift comeback at all.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

Glasnow stalling is nothing new, as this feels like a replay of some of his past injuries. Now, with no timeline in place, it’s unclear when he will be able to take that next step. The good news is that he isn’t shut down from throwing, meaning that it’s quite possible that they mis-evaluated where he should be.

Teoscar Hernandez – OF Los Angeles Angels

The good news is that this is a Grade 1 hamstring strain, which is the lowest-graded strain. Therefore, the timeline for a return is much quicker than the more severe types, making this not a huge deal for the Dodgers. That being said, he is older, and these can be reaggravated if a player rushes back too soon. That’s merely something to monitor.
