Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, May 1, 2025. In today’s edition, Mike Trout may have reinjured his knee, Jazz Chisholm will get clarity on his oblique today, and Justin Martinez may need a trip to the Injured List at some point. All of this and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

This was an unfortunate event, as Trout has been battling multiple injuries for many years now, with his left knee being the latest culprit. Manager Ron Washington said this was a precautionary move, so the hope is that the severity level here is minimal. Still, with him, one can’t be too careful, as his time away is usually quite significant when he is injured. There is a good chance that he misses today’s game, regardless of how hurt he is, to ensure that more damage isn’t done to an already healing knee. Ironically, he played just 29 games last season before getting injured, and this year, wouldn’t you know it, he got hurt during his 29th game played. Stay tuned.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 3B New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said Jazz Chisholm Jr. still has some soreness in his oblique today and is getting some treatment. Chisholm said he was feeling good earlier (and that he had "some flank").
An MRI in NY tomorrow will determine next steps. #Yankees

The good news here is that Chisholm told reporters that he felt better a day after injuring himself. Still, it’s not uncommon for players to say this and still require time away on the Injured List. Taking yesterday off before today’s MRI was all part of the plan, and the results of this examination will be key in deciding what happens next. Obliques can be a tricky injury to diagnose, since they tend to linger over time and can be more of a pain tolerance thing that needs to be managed. He is a typically slow healer, as his time away on the Injured List in the past has been quite lengthy. That being said, his former team, the Marlins, may have always taken a cautionary approach to his returns because they always deemed him as a cornerstone piece of their future, whereas here, the Yankees have multiple pieces and can spend the money to acquire more.
Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Big news from today’s injury update: Jared Jones has resumed throwing activity. Still a very long road ahead, but he is on the way back. More info to come on him and others on the IL.

Jones is recovering from a UCL sprain in his throwing elbow and has been shut down ever since it was diagnosed. While this is good news that he has progressed to some sort of throwing motion, he has a long way to go before he safely returns to the mound. Given his young age and importance to the team, there is a chance that he doesn’t pitch again until very late in the season for a “peace of mind” type of outing. B then, chances are that the Pirates are looking ahead to 2026 anyway.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Clayton Kershaw is done for the day in OKC. He was pitching incredibly well until he gave up two home runs in the 5th. Still a solid day.
His final line:

Kershaw completed yet another successful rehab outing on Wednesday, this time going five innings strong over 66 pitches. Velocity for him has never been his forte, so it’s more about his control and command at the plate. He looked comfortable and looked to be almost ready for a return. That being said, because he is on the 60-day Injured List, he is not eligible to return until very late in May.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Edman said he tweaked his right ankle last night and still felt some discomfort today, which is why he didn't play. Sitting out today plus having the team off-day tomorrow gives him some extra rest before the long road trip. https://t.co/H2GafkCXYl
— Sonja Chen (@SonjaMChen) April 30, 2025
It is unclear if Edman will require more time off other than yesterday’s game and today’s off-day, but it’s important to note that a trip to the Injured List has not yet been discussed. We should know more before the team plays tomorrow, but there is a chance that he misses some of this weekend’s games. An alternative is recommended in fantasy for those who can edit their rosters.
Justin Martinez – RP Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo said Justin Martinez says he feels great but with the velocity down Lovullo said that imaging and/or an IL stint are possible. They are still evaluating him and he can’t rule it out.
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) May 1, 2025
Given how hard he throws, how much spin he commands, how he has had shoulder fatigue, and how early in the season it is, there is a decent chance that Martinez ends up on the Injured List at some point this season. Fantasy owners would be wise to plan ahead for this. As for Diamondbacks options, Shelby Miller and Kevin Ginkel cannot be ruled out for save opportunities.
Max Scherzer – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Max Scherzer's mound session Wednesday went "fairly well," per Blue Jays manager John Schneider:
"He's definitely making progress. The last two times off the mound, the feedback has been a lot better."
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) April 30, 2025
The good news here is that it would appear that Scherzer’s thumb is feeling better after the separate injections. It is still concerning that we are more than a month into this trip to the Injured List, and he is still slowly progressing. Whether or not he returns this season, there is a chance that this is the last we see of Scherer this year, as Father Time may be catching up with him.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
Ranger Suarez will start Sunday, Ron Thomson said.
Jesus Luzardo on Friday. Aaron Nola on Saturday.
