Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, February 28, 2026. In today’s edition, Zack Wheeler had himself a tremendous bullpen session that is making the Phillies re-evaluate all that they know about him. Meanwhile, the Giants are dealing with two injuries to key pieces of their lineup. Finally, is it time to start worrying about Blake Snell, not only to start the season healthy, but pitch at all this season? All of this and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Zack Wheeler – SP Philadelphia Phillies

Wow, this situation really escalated over the past couple of days. Wheeler threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday and will do so again tomorrow. The team believes that he can handle 25 pitches in total, which would be an increase from his 20 pitches earlier this week. He himself has said that he feels completely normal when out there. The hope is that both the Phillies and Wheeler aren’t getting ahead of themselves and pushing too hard and too fast, all because of one great day. Despite that, this feels like very good and promising news for one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy.
Royce Lewis – 3B Minnesota Twins
Royce Lewis’s MRI came back clean. #MNTwins breathe a sigh of relief.

Here’s a collective sigh of relief from anyone who has drafted him to be on their fantasy teams, and for Twins fans everywhere. To call Lewis injury-prone is quite the understatement. He has missed significant time for injuries all over his body, but he did work hard in the offseason reworking the mechanics of his swing, positioning of his batting stance, and the overall health and well-being of his body. Here’s hoping that he gets a chance to see if that hard work paid off.
Blake Snell – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said Blake Snell has been making progress in his throwing progression (which, for now, has still been limited to flat-ground sessions)
But he acknowledged that, given the calendar, it’s gonna be “hard” for him to be ready for opening day
— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) February 27, 2026
Snell is being slow-played by the Dodgers for shoulder issues that he felt during the 2025 playoffs. It’s a pretty scary situation, given that he’s still feeling the effects of this injury. Additionally, he may miss time for needing rest; meanwhile, getting rest this past offseason didn’t actually work for him to begin with. Essentially, he is draped with red flags all over him and is someone to avoid in drafts, unless the cost is incredibly minuscule.
San Francisco Giants – Team Update
Re: Rafael Devers, he had some slight discomfort while doing infield work.
Neither Bader or Devers were slated to play tomorrow anyway. Vitello said the team will see how they're doing for Sunday's home game against the Padres. https://t.co/KXPEIz0MWw
— Justice delos Santos (@justdelossantos) February 27, 2026
These two injuries are clumped together for a common theme, which will be explained shortly. First, Harrison Bader has been playing through a thumb injury and had to exit yesterday’s game as a result. As for Rafael Devers, he didn’t make it to the starting lineup yesterday because of an aggravated hamstring injury. However, both injuries are believed to be minor, and they could both be in the lineup for tomorrow’s game.
Samuel Basallo – C Baltimore Orioles
Orioles’ Samuel Basallo is in good spirits after leaving yesterday’s game with abdominal discomfort. Suggested that the injury was just cramping and he thinks he’ll be able to get back in a game this weekend.
— Matt Weyrich (@ByMattWeyrich) February 27, 2026
On the day of the injury, Basallo believed that he would be fine. The day after, he felt good about how things felt overall. That said, for him to hope he’ll return after a few days off shows that he was still in some sort of pain or discomfort about a day after the incident. From the sounds of it, he’s not out of the woods just yet, but it’s not quite as serious as it first looked.
Brenton Doyle – OF Colorado Rockies
An MRI on #Rockies CF Brenton Doyle revealed a left wrist sprain. Doyle, who was scratched from the lineup on Wednesday, will rest for a few more days, then be re-evaluated.

This injury has taken many forms since it happened. It has gone from a precautionary exit, to needing further testing, and now seeing that Doyle is out with a wrist sprain. It’s unclear if this injury would have kept him out of action on the Injured List if it had taken place mid-season, but it looks like we’ll know more by the end of the weekend. Stay tuned.
Andrew Benintendi – OF Chicago White Sox
White Sox say Andrew Benintendi was scratched with right side soreness
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) February 27, 2026
Benintendi isn’t a stranger to playing through and/or missing time due to injuries; however, this doesn’t feel like it’s a major situation. The team will likely keep us updated in the coming days.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
Delayed starters Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford are throwing live BP today. For Crawford, it’s his first time facing hitters since last summer, before he hurt his wrist.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) February 27, 2026
Both sessions for Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford went well, with Crawford’s standing out as the better the better session of the two sessions. Both pitchers are vying for a spot at the end of the Red Sox rotation, which is currently occupied by Johan Oviedo. The good news is that Crawford’s injury was wrist-related, and his surgery happened so long ago. With Sandoval, he had Tommy John Surgery, and as such, his return is a bit murkier.
