Carroll was hit on the hand by a pitch late in last night’s game. He was removed before he could return to the field, as team officials were examining him. As mentioned here, the X-rays he received came back negative, which is a good sign that it is just a contusion. It remains to be seen if he will miss today’s game, though with it being such a quick turnaround to an afternoon game, chances are he sits. Stay tuned.
Cole Ragans – SP Kansas City Royals
A second opinion that Cole Ragans received yesterday confirmed the rotator cuff strain. He’s shut down from throwing for four weeks (from when he got hurt, so almost two weeks in at this point). He’ll be re-evaluated after four weeks to determine if he can start a progression.
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) June 18, 2025
We have been waiting for news on this second opinion, and with all things considered, this was pretty positive. First, Ragans has already been away for half of this estimated shutdown time, meaning that he only has two more weeks before being re-evaluated. If things are healing the way they should, he will likely begin ramping up once July hits. However, if things aren’t what they should be, then we may be looking at alternatives that aren’t rest-related. While we may not have the definitive answer we wanted now, it’s positive in that it wasn’t the ominous answer that’s usually associated with second opinions.
Philadelphia Phillies – Team Update
Back in Philadelphia, Bryce Harper's range of motion and strength continue to improve. He is "getting close" to throwing.
Rob Thomson also thinks the ankle sprain is behind Aaron Nola now, and he's focused on the rib injury.
— Lochlahn March (@lochlahn) June 18, 2025
The good news here is that Bryce Harper is getting close to being able to throw, and that might be what propels him back into the Phillies’ lineup. It’s hard to imagine him needing a rehab assignment, as he’s the type of hitter who so easily adapts back to Major League hitting, that if he’s physically comfortable, he’ll be fine and work out the timing kinks. All that being said, the bad news is that this news hasn’t changed since the weekend, so his status of “getting close” feels stagnant. As for Aaron Nola, one injury down, and one to go, as he is looking to salvage some part of this wretched season, and give fantasy owners a return on their investment.
Max Meyer – SP Miami Marlins
Max Meyer told the media today that he is going to visit a hip specialist.#Marlins
— Kevin Barral (@kevin_barral) June 18, 2025
Meyer’s hip was a lingering issue that may have caused his early-season momentum to dwindle to the point where he did. If he can figure out the problem and be done with it, he has a chance to return to his former state of dominance. However, given how long he has been out of action, the window could be closing on that opportunity soon. This appointment will be a key factor in deciding the future.
Jorge Soler – OF Los Angeles Angels
Jorge Soler is out today with a stiff back. He's day to day.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 18, 2025
The Angels don’t seem overly worried about this, but it is worth noting that Soler has been battling injuries all season long. Perhaps some extended rest will help him heal up and get back to the offensive player we thought he would be in 2025.
Michael King – SP San Diego Padres
Mike Shildt today acknowledged that Michael King (pinched nerve) will almost certainly be out through the All-Star break, at least. King is throwing lightly with plyo balls and regular baseballs. But he's not on any sort of throwing progression toward a return yet.
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) June 19, 2025
The team is still in the process of evaluating King’s condition, as they have been very careful not to undermine his condition. It has now been over one month of inactivity, making this quite a worrisome situation. Even if he were to start throwing today, there is a lot of build-up needing to happen, and an incumbent rehab assignment to boot. With the plan for him to be out until at least the All-Star Break, fantasy owners should continue to go with their Plan B until there is more of a definitive analysis. In leagues without IL slots, selling or dropping remains an option, just in case we get word that he is, in fact, out for the season.
