Deep League Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets for Week 14

While most fantasy baseball purists focus on category-oriented rotisserie leagues, there’s much wisdom that can be gained from playing in a points league format. In particular, the dynamics for hitters changes significantly as home runs and steals don’t rule in player valuations for points leagues like they do in category leagues. When playing in the more balanced scoring format of points leagues, a fantasy manager realizes that consistent hitting is actually the most valuable asset. That’s why this week’s deep league waiver wire article focuses on several players that provide consistent production and have value in both points and category formats.

Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 14

15-Team Mixed League Targets

1. Max Muncy, 2B/3B/SS, Athletics (31% rostered)

For the last decade, we’ve become accustomed to seeing the name Max Muncy high in the third base rankings for fantasy baseball. Now, we’re seeing double as there’s another Max Muncy rising up those same rankings. Yet, their names are really the only thing the two Max Muncy players have in common. While the notable Dodgers’ player Max Muncy is an on-base and power producer, the Athletics version is more of a singles hitter with moderate speed. Though recently we’ve started to see a new side of the younger Muncy as he’s hit four home runs with 11 RBI over the last 15 games. While the batting average and on-base skills are still a bit inconsistent, he’s starting to find his groove and is maintaining an everyday lineup role.

2. Andrew McCutchen, DH, Pirates (22% rostered)

Some players somehow defy the aging curve and hold fantasy relevance late in their careers. That’s definitely the case with the 38-year-old, and likely future Hall of Famer, Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates. Despite an up-and-down 2024 season, where he batted .232, McCutchen has bounced back with a fervor this season. In fact, in April he batted an impressive .292 with a .378 on-base percentage. While that pace has slowed a bit over the last month, he’s still increased his category production. In fact, four of his seven home runs have come in the last 15 games, along with steady run and RBI output to follow. McCutchen’s days of 30+ home run production have long gone out of his reach, but he’s on pace to repeat his 20 home run line from last season, along with an above-average batting average.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Lenyn Sosa, 1B/2B/3B/SS, White Sox (17% rostered)

When it comes to AL or NL-only leagues, the calculus of waiver wire target decisions changes a bit from regular leagues. In particular, multi-position eligible players hold considerably more value in these formats given the greater position scarcity. This is where a player like Lenyn Sosa of the White Sox can have real fantasy relevance. He’s just good enough to garner attention, but his position eligibility across the infield put him over the edge in the waiver wire mix. Since his return from the IL i mid-May, Sosa has shone with a .296 batting average. Now he’s become a fixture in a lineup that is showing signs of growth over the last month and is adding meaningful fantasy contributions.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Mickey Moniak, OF, Rockies (14%)

For most players, being selected first overall in a draft is a dream come true. That is, until the magnitude of the expectations is considered. For Mickey Moniak, he’s not yet lived up to those expectations as a former number one pick back in 2016 and has struggled to redeem himself from the disappointment of his career. Now, on his third team already with Colorado, the 27-year-old outfielder is finally starting to show flashes of his upside potential over the last month. In fact, he’s been red hot as of late with a .429 batting average and four home runs in the last seven games. While that pace is not sustainable, his production should draw intrigue from fantasy managers in NL-only leagues who are willing to take a chance on a potential redemption story with Moniak.
