Rest of Season Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Yates and Trout Turn Back Time

Do you know how a dog year is the equivalent of seven human years? I think we need to start incorporating a similar mindset when it comes to closers. Remember when Abner Uribe closed three games for the Milwaukee Brewers in the first week of the season? Well, he hasn’t closed one since and enters Sunday’s play with a 1.74 WHIP. I still have Uribe higher in my rest-of-season rankings than fellow relievers Joel Payamps and Trevor Megill. However, you can see by where I have them ranked that I am not relying on any of them for consistent saves as things currently stand. It looks like Uribe has fallen out of favor, which would leave the situation looking more or less like we thought it would before Opening Day.

In Texas, we have seen what appears to look more like a traditional changing of the guard. Kirby Yates is partying like it’s 2019. He has racked up two saves this week and is sporting a pristine 0.00 ERA and 0.46 WHIP. I have Yates ranked higher than David Robertson or Jose Leclerc until further notice. Having said that, Yates will have to work his way up my ROS rankings. The 8.2 innings he has thrown so far this year are his second-highest total in any season since his standout 2019 campaign. If he is on the waiver wire in your league, grab him and ride him until the wheels fall off. Just bear in mind that there is a decent chance they do indeed fall off at some point.

Speaking of players partying like it’s 2019, Holy Mike Trout, Batman! Trout’s .256 batting average and nine walks in 21 games are well below what we have come to expect from the future Hall of Famer. But Trout has not lost his power stroke, belting eight home runs. And Trout’s wheels have very much been on display in April. Trout has already stolen five bases this season. He had not stolen more than two bases in a season since 2019. I do not think we can suddenly expect Trout to return to his glory days on the basepaths, but any steals he provides are a huge boost to an already stellar fantasy portfolio. Trout is currently sixth on the Player Rater. Regression is in store, but I have continued to edge closer to buying Trout as a top-25 player going forward for as long as he remains healthy.
